Tired of waiting while wolframscript from @wolframresearch.bsky.social loads its runtime? Haven’t bothered to study the manuals? Well then, here’s a quick tip for an order of magnitude faster startup experience: moldrup-dalum.dk/per/output/2...
Hi Miguel! All’s good here: Easter vacation/spring break Danish style. I also watched it with my kids – just after midnight 😎
Launch of Artemis II
Oh yeah!
Really love xkcd; this one made me literally LOL. Spot on, perfect timing, great nerdish punchline
In the first few days of spring break, I've yet again been playing with LLMs and rekindling the fun in making the computer do as I want. Much can be said about LLMs, but one can't get around the fact that they are useful: moldrup-dalum.dk/per/output/2...

hyperfine results are in on start-up time, a.k.a.
Print["Hello, World!"]
vs
#include<stdio.h>
void main() {printf("Hello, World!\n");}
wolframscript took 1.245s
a.out took 1.4ms
C wins by a factor 889!
😄
NB: off course this is in no way neither fair nor a correct real world comparison 🫣
Thank you, Martin!
Very glad you liked it – it was fun to write 😃
Also thank you for mentioning hyperfine. I do think it would be unfair towards Mathematica and Julia to use "wall time" to compare with C. As in maybe >1 order of magnitude…
But now I have to play with that also 😄
…to be cont.
I just realized that what I write about in this piece is just the same kind of fun as what I had with my ZX Spectrum 30 years ago. Exactly the kind of joyful uselessness encouraged by the Queen.
Best wishes for a new year filled with useless things that make it fun to be alive 🙂🎇
“The Software Paper fills a gap for the computational and digital humanities communities...” Thank you to research software engineer extraordinaire @suttonkoeser.bsky.social for leading this initiative for Computational Humanities Research journal. Please share!

Does anyone know of good methods for tracking dataset contaminations that doesn't rely on generation? Anything would be greatly appreciated
Asking as we would like to track and detect dataset contamination in MTEB:

I told it to speak Danish, which it agreed to — in Norwegian but insisting it was Danish. I actually got a bit carried away due to its very human like language and way of speaking. I don’t need that level of artificial human interaction
Alas, the day’s afoot. For me it began with the news of Googles new AI release and then spiraled into a regular argument with an audio AI on whether it spoke Danish or Norwegian

🎥 Sneak Peek: Lauren Klein at #CHR2024
Don’t miss @laurenfklein.bsky.social’s keynote speech titled "When Theory Leads: Towards a Humanities-Forward Model of Computational Research" at 9 o’clock this morning! 🕘
If you're attending #CHR2024 or if you want to follow along at home, you can pin this feed to your home page. Currently just looks for the hashtag, lmk if I should match to anything else.
It probably won’t and it’s just a condition, something unavoidable and we’ll just have to migrate every five years or such.
The victory march of democracy has ended
What can we as researchers do?
In the Scandinavian countries, a particular tool is available: Democracy & Power Studies.
The Danish government appointed me as director of such a study. We started our work this year.
