One of my Scottish g g grandmothers surname was spelled differently on every record of her (ie birth, marriage birth of children)MacClure, MacAleer, McLure, McCleary, McLeary are just a few…..I have many other examples. When folk were illiterate others spelled names for them. 🤷🏻‍♀️

📢 New Episode 📢

The fifth episode of The Shropshire Witches Podcast is now live. In this episode, we explore the history and enduring legacy of The Workhouse. The human aspect of this episode made this difficult to record, but we believe it is so important.

Best of Ancestor Trouble was a book of the year per New Yorker, NPR, Washington Post, and more; a finalist for the John Leonard Prize; a NYT Editors’ Choice selection; and a Roxane Gay Book Club pick.

Hello, new followers! You might like my book, ANCESTOR TROUBLE, if you're interested in family history, genealogy, mental health, generational trauma, systemic harms, and spiritual practices around ancestors and our alienation from those practices in Western modernity. maudnewton.com/book/ancesto...

My g g g grandmother immigrated alone to Australia from Germany and married shortly after arrival having a baby 5 months later. She had given birth a year earlier in Germany to a baby girl who died - father unknown. Her sibling remained in Germany and no clue there as to the father. #genealogy
