British universities paid security firm to ‘spy’ on pro-Palestine students Investigation reveals how Horus, a company led by ex-military intelligence officials, was hired during protest movement.

No money for jobs. Plenty of money for spying.

Many of the 12 universities who paid private intelligence to spy on pro-Palestine activists are forcing through major job cuts.

@drjogrady.bsky.social it's "shameful", universities have "wasted hundreds of thousands spying on their own students"

Yesterday, we hosted a live screening of the People's Emergency Briefing. Throughout the film, UK scientists issued stark warnings about the climate crisis.

Here are just a few responses made by our audience members following the film.

A series of talks this afternoon on mapping ESD. Key takeaways - no one-size-fits-all approach will work for different disciplines or institutions. SDGs useful for mapping for some institutions.

Then a session on AI and ESD. Made me reflect on the speed of change (in my institution anyway) with ESD Vs the speed of change with AI.... Spoiler alert, took 5 yrs to get as far as an institutional approach for ESD Vs 2 yrs for AI!

Aaaaaand then Bluesky has another breakdown, so much for the live updates! I won't mention every lightning talk I saw but some really thought provoking presentations on decolonising ESD which I'll be reflecting on.

I don't know why this is so hard for some people to grasp. If we extend our use of fossil gas, rather than going all-out for grid batteries, heat pumps and induction hobs, we extend our dependence on *foreign* sources of gas, regardless of whether we also use the UK's last remaining reserves. 🧵

Absolute 🔥 this.

'It has been recently suggested that universities, as they currently exist, are not fit for purpose in a time of planetary emergency, and there is a desperate need to develop alternative approaches.'

Eight mallets, eight moles, and a blindfold There's a fascinating HEPI Debate paper out on marketisation.

More on the Richmond HEPI paper - "Every proposal adds complexity, administrative burden, and regulatory overhead to compensate for harms the system produces by design." wonkhe.com/wonk-corner/...

“Unexplained” grade inflation means grades that aren’t predicted by the limited regression model they use. It ignores the increased emphasis on good teaching and student experience. If the NSS hadn’t improved teaching and hence outcomes what was the point?

There’s some good stuff in here, but the last recommendation of grading to a curve is bonkers. It is interference in academic judgement. We use criterion grading in the UK, and it might not be perfect, but where we have good teaching and good students they should all have the potential to do well.

A degree of regulation: Building a more financially sustainable and resilient higher education sector - HEPI Excessive risk-taking by higher education providers must be curtailed. With concerns mounting over the financial health of the English higher education sector, a new report from the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) – written by Tom Richmond, a former adviser to ministers at the Department for Education – argues many universities have taken too many […]

Don't agree with grading on a curve to set %s: will get a fairly universal raspberry from colleagues. Maybe softening the ridiculous pseudo-market will help there anyway. Metrics involved in wider recommendations also inherently problematic, tho you need some. 🤷‍♂️ (2/3)

The UK must immediately and unequivocally suspend support for the US military.

The Government have tried to appease him, then they tried to say they're standing up to him.

Words aren't enough - it's time for action.

Earth sets at 6:41 p.m. EDT, April 6, 2026, over the Moon’s curved limb in this photo captured by the Artemis II crew during their journey around the far side of the Moon. Orientale basin is perched on the edge of the visible lunar surface. Hertzsprung Basin appears as two subtle concentric rings, which are interrupted by Vavilov, a younger crater superimposed over the older structure. The lines of indentations are secondary crater chains formed by ejecta from the massive impact that created Orientale. The dark portion of Earth is experiencing nighttime. On Earth’s day side, swirling clouds are visible over the Australia and Oceania region.

I am not one of those who believes that history repeats, but consider the following from Herodotus: the Oracle at Delphi told the fabulously wealthy King Croesus that if he invaded Persia he would "destroy a great empire." Croesus invaded and lost--the empire he destroyed was his own.

A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!

‘I see it as trafficking’: the brutal reality of life as a foreign student in the UK The long read: Universities in Britain rely on overseas applicants paying full fees, which has given rise to some unscrupulous recruiters and left many hopefuls and their families deep in debt

'In 2023, UK universities spent a total of £500m on education agents – but there is very little oversight of how these agents operate.'

'Once students got their offers, they were passed on to the visa team, and finally delivered to universities as a fully wrapped, fee-paying package.'

Have a break. Have 12 Tonnes of KitKat.

Remember, kids, Nestle is literally the company who literally told African mothers that their breast milk wasn't good enough in order to sell more formula.

Don't be a snitch, now.
