Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

"Alignment" (aka fealty) is not a merit-review criteria.
If ideology determines outcomes, our world-class federally funded research system will reward apparatchiks and loyalists while punishing opponents and critics.
And then soon, it won't be world-class.

Holding a phonebank today to pressure house members regarding science funding.
Judging by the shamefully opportunistic & politicizing rhetoric of some rightwingers on Twitter, & their cynical use of Charlie Kirk’s horrific murder for political point scoring, it’s almost as if Minnesota Rep. Melissa Hortman wasn’t murdered by a Trump-voting MAGA maniac just 12 weeks ago.
The people doing the non-glamorous government jobs right now are really putting in the work. thank you tireless NIH workers. 💕🫡
I’ll be holding a phonebank on Thursday to call voters living in swing districts represented by Republicans and asking them to contact their representatives about science funding.
A show of bipartisan support for NIH. Basically flat except for ARPA-H.
The President’s budget proposal basically ignored (as it should have been).
This is good news… for now.
The referenced 6/25 legal opinion was described in STAT: www.statnews.com/2025/07/06/h...
It says the legal risk for terminations will drop starting Oct 1.
How is SCOTUS likely to rule?
Have any been re-instated to their positions?
No! This is work in collaboration with a South Asian Democrat aligned organization called They See Blue. Here is the link to the mobilize: www.mobilize.us/engageblue/e...
Also immigrants were one of the groups to go more towards Trump in 2024 so we are trying to get them more involved in the political process and activism against Trump!
This is because I’m working with a South Asian organization which gives me the lists of voters to call. There are also a couple of other goals we’re working on - like electing Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and getting establishment Dems to endorse Mamdani

Sign to support our brave FEMA colleagues.
This is a good watch. So much potentially impactful science is being stopped for no good reason.
Would recommend constitutional law professor Steve Vladeck’s take which is more optimistic! www.tiktok.com/@steve_vlade...
Just posted a video to TikTok about what #SCOTUS did in the NIH funding case.
It’s too long to embed on Bluesky, but here’s a link:

Will this not be prevented by the amendment that was added to the NIH appropriations bill?
An interesting piece about how scientists can help defend democracy by creating a sort of "shadow cabinet" that models how science and regulatory agencies should be functioning.
Many other cities should do this!
I’m holding a phonebank to call voters living in swing states/swing districts to get them to call their representatives about NIH funding. Join if possible!
The #BethesdaDeclaration signers killed it today during the roundtable with Jay.
Some of my favorite highlights shared from my colleagues:

Please watch the workshop video and COMMENT by 5:00 Monday 7/14
This is the source of the "no more model organism only grants in NIH-funded research" decree.
Yesterday, marked 1 month since we sent the #BethesdaDeclaration.
So, has anything changed? 🧵 1/n
