Ah yes, as a Latin Americanist it will be so easy to write projects focused on the US's "moral leadership" 🙄🤪
Well deserved!!!
So messed up! The state Dept is implementing new vetting standards of foreign students' social media to look for "terrorist and antisemitic" sympathies. A front to slow student enrollments, chill free speech, and dissuade students from studying in the US 😡
The Trump administration is unlawfully seeking to destroy higher education in the United States. It now demands that we sacrifice our international students in the process. Universities cannot acquiesce to such extortion.
Review of dear @ambliopia.bsky.social’s not to be missed The Company — finally published in English! @cetracey.bsky.social does a great job threading Verónica Gerber Bicecci’s previous work, so if you’re new to her fabulous books, this is a good starting point.
Although I’m mostly off social media at this point, I did want to mark my last day teaching at UChicago. It’s been a truly rich experience getting to work with such wonderful students. Happily, I’ll be continuing my career as Assistant Professor of Spanish at Wartburg College this fall!
"What if, rather than blaming Palestinians, Arab Americans, and American Muslims, these pundits had seen their treatment—under Biden and for decades before him—as central to the Trump-led repression looming before us?"

My book is out! I was waiting to post a pic holding it IRL, but alas, it is yet to arrive. I hope you will check it out, and ask your library to buy a copy! www.vanderbiltuniversitypress.com/978082650617...
The latest installment of my column for Atlas Obscura, "Eerie Feeling," on places and spaces that generate that sense of the eerie, is live. It's about lake monsters! Who doesn't love a lake monster?
I’ll be at the MLA on Thursday presenting with colleagues on the panel “Beyond Magical Realism: Revindicating the Irreal in Contemporary South America.” Hope to see you there to discuss folklore, the occult, and science fiction!
Incredible!
The title page for a book. The title is Capitalism A Horror story: Gothic Marxism and the Dark Side of the Radical Imagination. It is by Jon Greenaway and published by Repeater Books
Typeset and finished. Will be getting in touch with people who might want to write endorsements over the next few days.
It has never been more urgent to strategize and to build a more democratic university.
If you’re around on Sunday at MLA, I would love to see you for our discussion of how unions and senates have worked together (or not) in the past and the present.
Description of an MLA 2024 roundtable, titled "Jerks," on the dyspeptic, cantankerous, and disagreeable in literature.
For my first Bluesky post, some #mla24 promo:
It's here! Wake up with "Jerks" this Friday at 8:30 am.
We'll hear about Oscar Zeta Acosta's pugnacious leadership in the Chicano movement, Coetzee’s jerk poetics, dyspeptic dads, Larry David, and the valences of "nothing" in Naipaul's work.

Shameless reminder that the best Xmas gift you can get me is to ask your library to order my book! 😁 press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/bo...
Hey all, I've started a new column at Atlas Obscura!
It's called "Eerie Feeling," and it takes Mark Fisher's definition of the "eerie" as a jumping off point to delve into some of the weirder aspects of history.
You can read the first installment, on the Mad Gasser of Mattoon, Illinois, here:
There is something pretty galling about the fact that Agnes Callard gets space in major outlets to free-associate about "Why are the humanities?" and Why It's Actually Fine To Marry Your Student, while some of us are applying to dozens of jobs and polishing manuscripts that may get rejected anyway.
Kissinger, the war criminal who, amidst many horrific crimes, was responsible for the support for Pinochet and the coup in Allende’s Chile
One of the great hopes and potency for Latin America brutally snuffed out and stamped out there.
We remember!
