In #GENETICS, @jsrinivasanwpi.bsky.social and the team present a rescue-by-feeding approach, showing that feeding engineered E. coli containing neuropeptides to #Celegans mutants can successfully rescue behavior defects in worms. buff.ly/Qdw9Nsq

Staphylococcus aureus-Induced Degeneration of Nociceptive Neurons in Caenorhabditis elegans Background In all animals, the nervous system senses microbial signals to influence host defense. Despite emerging as important sensors of infection to regulate immunity and inflammation, the mechanis...

This is really a cool story as to how serotonin affects sensory processing of conflicting stimuli!

This work is a significant part of her PhD thesis. She worked with a high school student, Sophia Guerra, to dissect the signaling mechanisms underlying serotonin signaling and discovered that ADF sensory neurons regulate decisions in response to opposing stimuli!

Serotonergic signaling governs C. elegans sensory response to conflicting olfactory stimuli Neural circuits that consolidate sensory cues are essential for neurological functioning. Neural circuits that perform sensory integration can vary greatly because the sensory processing regions of th...

Two papers in two weeksAnother paper from our lab is out for review!
This paper unravels how serotonin signaling via specific neurons is involved in deciphering conflicting olfactory stimuli. Great work from my grad student Caroline Muirhead, the lead author.

Holy microscopes Batman. This is shockingly good and unexpected news. Let me know if you'd like an update to your @the.3i.social microscope or a replacement to some obsolete microscopy equipment in your lab. 3i makes modular tools that can fit quite cleanly into the supplement program. #specificaims

While this manuscript contains more questions than answers, it is a great new tool for the community to test the function of individual peptides. Additionally, this method can be used for overexpression studies of neuropeptides as shown by our colleagues at BCM @rnareylab.bsky.social !

In this manuscript, which has been a few years in the development, we engineered a vector to code individual peptides. This vector was then transformed into bacteria and fed to loss of function neuropeptide worms. Lo and Behold, the mutant worms displayed rescue of the phenotype
