A new study suggests Canada could remove 5x its annual carbon emissions by planting trees in the newly thawed parts of permafrost — measured by how much carbon they'd capture over the course of 75 years assuming the new trees keep existing over that time
A huge opportunity.

Beyond Mark Carney's Liberals getting a majority in parliament after last night's by-elections, the real news is that the Conservatives fell tremendously in votes in Toronto. For example they fell from 23.5% to 12.4% in University-Rosedale while the NDP nearly doubled their vote share there
PM Mark #Carney welcomed an MP into his party who is anti-abortion rights, opposed the ban on gay conversation therapy, against legal cannabis, and in the pandemic spread vaccine misinformation.
What does Carney's Liberals stand for if their 'big tent' includes anti-abortion, anti-gay, anti-vax MP?
The Alberta NDP does not need to agree with the federal party. Democratic is in the name — not everyone has to agree or 'toe the line'.
But to lie about the new leader is disappointing from Naheed Nenshi and makes me lose trust in him.
Avi Lewis never cheered for the defeat of the Alberta NDP.
Doug Ford completely misses the moment. His "Fortress Am-Can" is based on the belief that Trump wants to "decouple from China" and to do so "Canada is here to help" — Did he not notice all the threats to our sovereignty and new unpredictable tariffs on a whim?

I highly recommend this speech by Mark #Carney, PM of #Canada
"The question for middle powers like Canada is not whether to adapt to the new reality. We must. The question is whether we adapt by simply building higher walls or whether we can do something more ambitious"

An important conversation, and I hope @matthewgreen.bsky.social is successful in democratizing the #NDP. #cdnpoli breachmedia.ca/the-ndp-is-r...
Jenrick's defection to #Reform reminds me how Labour does not have a clear message on Reform
Starmer wants to label Reform as a new dangerous, populist (even racist) threat
Some others in Labour say Reform's mostly the same Tories who damaged the #UK so badly that they needed to rebrand
It's both
Politicians: don't use AI to make your maps.
President Macron criticises the United States for abandoning allies and breaking international law:
"We reject the new colonialism and imperialism, but we also reject subjugation and defeatism"
"We want to be strong partners, doing everything we can, but when we make a commitment, we're there"
LK: Isn't your friend Donald #Trump contributing to global turmoil?
KS: We're in a more volatile world and that impacts the #UK...
LK: *repeats question*
KS: The relationship between the #US and UK is one of the closest in the world ... It is my responsibility to make sure that relationship works
LK: Other political leaders [such as Zack #Polanski] have already condemned it, even Nigel #Farage has said it's probably against international law. [France also said it's a violation of international law] Can you say that?
KS: I want to establish all the facts first ...

Laura Kuenssberg: You've been incredibly clear always that Vladimir Putin's attack on the sovereign country of Ukraine was wrong and ought to be condemned. What about President Trump's attack on the sovereign country of #Venezuela?
Keir #Starmer: I want to get all the facts
Trump's illegal invasion of Venezuela also undermines #Canada
An alternative source of heavy oil for US refineries drives down the value of oil in Alberta and makes a new pipeline to the coast less viable, so increases our dependency on them
Canada must invest in becoming a green energy superpower
There are posts all over social media here in the UK about how all the grocery stores are competing to have the cheapest vegetables ahead of Christmas
...meanwhile in my home country of Canada with little competition for groceries, NoName "imperfect" carrots are 21.6x more expensive
It's #UK budget day. We're about to hear how growth in the UK was stifled by US tariffs, so new taxes had to be raised
Look at #Canada — a country much more reliant on trade with the US, but has replaced the $ amount of trade lost to the US, spent far more within Canada and now outperform US stocks
As an immigrant to the #UK, I find it shocking that after inviting health and care workers during COVID (in teal) and British Nationals from Hong Kong (in orange), 5 years later when they're about to reach settled status, the UK wants to retrospectively change the rules.

I have no idea why Elizabeth May of the #Greens voted for this expansion of fossil fuels.
Just because #Carney said he'd meet the Paris Agreement isn't enough. His budget shows no way to get there. If she voted against it, it would have tied and with the speaker's vote, it would have passed anyway
On #Canada's Budget, unlike the Conservatives (who had 2 MPs wait and not enter the House in case), clearly the Liberals knew they would get 2 abstentions from each party and that's why they went ahead with the vote.
And the #NDP probably knew too because they knew to only have 2 of their 7 abstain
I work in London where we've had open payment (Use any debit or credit card or Apple/Google pay) to tap in on all transport modes for 13 years. It shouldn't be that hard for every city to do
Much of outer London has train services into central #London, but not to each other
Enter the Superloop, London's Express Bus Network 🚌, which is now expanding with 5 new routes
#TfL is asking for input here: haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk
Here's a map I made with the routes overlaid on the Tube & Rail map
Why is Tim Hortons so much worse now and really why is so much of #Canada owned by a few (often foreign) companies

Today, on the day of atonement, I can't stop thinking how I could've done more, and how I must do more now and going forward into the next year, I must find a way to. The way Oscar Schindler breaks down at the end of Schindler's List, thinking he could have saved just a few more people but didn't — it keeps rattling in my brain. I can't help but to think of the real actual people suffering and dying without a way out, without even a safe place to sleep, and with a severe lack of food and healthcare and basic sanitation. I think as a kid when my friend said he too was a victim of 9/11, because if it wasn't for that he likely wouldn't be going through this degree of discrimination. And as that is true, it's true for those in Manchester today paying a horrible price made more likely by hate and discrimination wrongly fueled by what's happening. We'll never have peace, without guarantees of security and guarantees of freedom for all. To life G'mar hatima tova
During the #TubeStrikes, fellow Londoners remember the Overground lines, Elizabeth line, and bus network are still operating but will be busier than usual or hire a SantanderCycles e-bike.
#TfL is for the first time seeking a sponsorship for an entire Tube line: The Waterloo & City line shuttling between Waterloo and Bank stations.
Best case scenario: #AbbaVoyage should sponsor it and have Waterloo playing on one end and MoneyMoneyMoney on the other

For #London 's Santander Cycles' 15th birthday, you can hire #bikes and e-bikes for FREE every Sunday in August!
Make sure to bring it back within 1 hour to not be charged, but then can hire it again and again for free
Use code CYCLESUNDAYS plus the date (so CYCLESUNDAYS03 for this Sunday the 3rd)
Mark Carney's #StrongBordersAct is to appease Trump.
It lets police see your internet history, IP address, and open your mail all without a warrant.
Instead let's actually make our borders stronger:
- Stop guns from illegally entering #Canada
- Stop the $1bn worth of stolen cars exported annually
I largely agree with Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson's #Abundance: Speed up approvals and lower costs to deliver more.
But, I worry what #Ontario is doing with Bill 5 is where these ideas lead. Cutting all reviews and environmental protections for whatever the #government wants.

Croydon Labour MP lays out a key piece missing for the UK's growth: A long-term funding deal for the only transport authority in the country without one, Transport for London.
Long-term funding allows for future planning and 100k jobs across 477 constituencies.

I usually just write off the #US as a lost cause. But this got my attention.
The bill destroys all the #climate progress they're making just to spite Biden. They don't seem to care that it concedes these industries to China, raises energy prices, and 80% of the jobs would've been in republican areas
