If we're all taking a moment to celebrate Canadian and local food, then there's no better time to re-post this amazing series by @bychrischeung.bsky.social about delicious local food made by family-owned businesses here in B.C.

Cardboard protest sign saying “First they came for the scientists and the National Park Service said ‘lol, no’ and went rogue, and we were all like ‘I was not expecting the Park Rangers to lead the Resistance. None of the dystopian novels I’ve read prepared me for this.’”
My new favourite protest sign.

Quite aside from the damage to the goodwill, which is already incalculable, the US is no longer a safe supplier of unprocessed food, because it's no longer tracking outbreaks of infections. No sane purchaser will buy produce that might contain E. coli, dairy that might contain listeria, mean that might contain salmonella, and the US is keeping it secret. Boycotting American produce, meat, and dairy isn't just a matter of Canadian patriotism, it's also a matter of public health.

I won't be boycotting all things US. Let's make sure that in our haste to focus on buying Canadian, that we also support the bright lights in the US fighting against #fascism in their own country. Please consider subscribing like I just did - and paying. We need to start paying for good #journalism.

Black history month starts today and this administration would like us to forget it,
The Internet Archive has to date downloaded 500 terabytes of US government websites, which it crawls at the end of every presidential term. The whole archive is fully searchable. This effort's housed by a donation-funded nonprofit, not a branch of the US government. blog.archive.org/2024/05/08/e...
This is what the government did with 120K+ Japanese Americans in 1942.
I know. I was there in those camps.
I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world.
Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO
I loved hanging out with @mandylen.bsky.social recently for one of the interviews that fueled her beautiful, thoughtful piece. Thanks for being interested in @heyneighbourcollective.ca's work Mandy and for your beautiful writing about #socialresilience, #socialconnection etc.
Looking forward to this conversation about ways that our #builtenvironment can positively impact levels of #socialconnection in communities. I'll focus my comments on #housing, particularly exploring work that we have been doing with @happycities.com and local governments in BC.
As cities deal with the effects of climate change, protecting the tree canopy & planting street trees will be critical.
Surface temperature on two adjacent blocks of the same Winnipeg street. The second block had its street trees removed in the 1960’s to add car lanes.
Building secure, comfortable, and accessible spaces for bicycles not only encourages people to get on their bikes, but it also has the added benefit of encouraging social connection! Check out the toolkit we've put together with @happycities.com to learn more. 🚲
