One positive of this nasty chronic health flare is that I’m FINALLY learning to be a bit more flexible about when I write. I still do my best work in the mornings, but writing while dizzy is just not happening. 😵‍💫

Desperately trying to cut down my manuscript’s word count while being overly precious about cutting any scenes is killing me.

Got my first personalized rejection of a short story, saying the piece was “cool” but not the right fit. Taking that as a win!

Finally feeling like I’m editing my prior draft instead of completely rewriting everything which is So.Damn.Exciting.

Anyone use dictation to write? I’ve had a lot of vertigo lately that makes it hard to stare at a screen much, which is sad because I’m itching to write. Not sure how weird my writing would get if I was dictating instead of typing, but would love to hear anyone’s experience with this.

Give me an update on your writing progress? I need inspiration and hearing about other writers writing always helps!

Been struggling to write lately because of flare ups in my chronic migraines 😞 though it makes anytime I do get to the page that much sweeter. Will take any encouragement or inspiration you’ve got!

Every novella I read, I end up just wishing it was a full length novel. Am curious if anyone has novellas they love that felt just right in length?

Looking for tools to help plan out multiple POVs 😱I was writing along happily following my outline, until this morning I realized one POV is far ahead of the other. Now I’m stuck. Help! Do I run out and buy a pack of notecards? Or is there an electronic tool that works for this?

Was put on my ass this weekend by one of my worst migraines yet. I’d hoped to finish my next round of outlining, but, as so often happens, my intentions didn’t align with my capacity. It’s a humbling experience to be in these waves of chronic illness…🌊🌊🌊

There seem to be so many paid sub stacks/newsletters about querying, agents, submissions, etc. Have folks found Duotrope, sub club, or others worth paying for? Specifically for fantasy/speculative fiction writers?

I’ve ditched word count goals—as someone with chronic illness, it’s not realistic to pre-prescribe how much I’m going to write. Instead, I’m trying to pop in and say “hello, I love you,” to my novel everyday. Even if it’s just going through a scene in my mind.

I can’t think of a single word for this, but can picture exactly what you mean.

You know it’s a good book when you get to the last page and frantically go back three chapters just so you won’t be done yet.

From 1,000 to 100,000: how flash fiction improved my novel I recently completed Clarion West’s Flash Fiction workshop. It was my first ever class focused on works shorter than a novel–flash fiction is typically capped around 1,000 words. I took…

Taking a flash fiction class has vastly improved my novel! My writing is more vivid and my pacing is better. Would highly recommend this kind of cross-form workshop. More on this in my new blog post: ktreedwrites.com/2026/01/17/f...

Turns out reading dialogue out loud does in fact makes it 10x easier to edit! Now please ignore me while I hunch in the corner muttering my manuscript at the wall….

Agreed, thank you! Sometimes giving yourself permission to do that is so tough.

Revision is a slog. I keep thinking the 3rd draft should be…better. I’m taking any and all words of advice and encouragement at this point 🫠🫠🫠🫠

A great winter read! A beautiful story about a couple who finds love in each other and in community in the most desolate, rugged of places. The magical element was so interwoven I started to doubt whether it was magic at all.

Any other chronically ill or disabled writers out there who know the feeling of getting a good health day, and it turning into a manic writing session which then crashes you again? I try not to do this, but just can't help it if I wake up clear headed.

Very much enjoyed reading this one. The story was a nuanced reflection about power and the moral sacrifices people make to get it. None of the characters' motivations were simple. Looking forward to reading the 2nd book!

How many f-bombs is too many? It's very much a part of one of my POV's vocab, but I don't want to overdo it. How do other folks approach swearing or not swearing for your characters?

How many times have you rewritten your first chapter? Just started another rewrite, I think this is probably number 6 or 7.

Finished re-outlining and am about to dive back in to writing my THIRD draft! Have to celebrate every small step of this very long process 🎉🎉

Anyone else find they can only write at a certain time of day? I can only seem to make my brain want to write between about 7-10am, which is not convenient for my life. If anyone has managed to expand their natural writing hours, please tell me how!

I’m hoping when I stop rearranging chapters and scenes in my head!
