Who’s Really Making the Decisions? LLMs, tariffs, and the silent takeover of decisions

My stock portfolio is deep in the red, and tariffs by the Trump admin might be the cause. Could an LLM have been used to calculate them? It made me rethink how LLMs shape decisions, from big global-economy-wrecking ones to everyday decisions.

A screenshot of PayPal's terms of service. Big wall of legalese text, which I will be pasting in below. You don't need to read it, here's the important part:

"The key update to the Privacy Statement explains how we will share information with merchants to personalize your shopping experience and recommend our services to you. Personal information we disclose includes, for example, products, preferences, sizes, and styles we think you’ll like. Information gathered about you after the effective date of our updated Privacy Statement, November 27, 2024, will be shared with participating stores where you shop."

Here's the whole paragraph:

We are updating our Privacy Statement to explain how, starting early Summer 2025, we will share information to help improve your shopping experience and make it more personalized for you. In 2025 (less than 30 days away), PayPal will start selling your transaction history for targeted advertising.

I very highly recommend logging into your account and going to Settings > Data & Privacy > Personalized Shopping.

If you're reading this, turn that off RIGHT NOW before you forget.

Who is this crazy person following you?
If you are a developer using #Java, #PHP, #Ruby, #Elixir, #typescript, #javascript, #node, #scala, #kotlin you may have asked yourself:Why does he have starter packs for every known programming language.
I would like to explain. I am not crazy. I am concerned.

Black and white photo of a light skinned toddler with curly hair, reaching as far as she can over a white tiled counter toward a shorthaired tabby cat. The cat has an alarmed look, safe but clearly aware of the little hand grasping for it.

This cat knew exactly how far it needed to sit. Negative from my collection, no additional info.

I’m thinking about writing a book about climate change and the food system. Mainly focused on solutions, taking a global view, and busting a few myths.

What would make it most useful?

When somebody preached a sermon on a decentralized social network, you may ask, “‘true believer’ in CRDTs? Any practical CRDT ideas?”

To avoid using hypocrisy, I suggest a new word “hypodex”. hypo+dex, a hypodermic decentralization.
It sounds like a hypocrisy dex. 🥲

I guess that they don’t have practical CRDT ideas with AWS well-architected framework. Scaling a decentralized infrastructure (multi-cloud, hybrid-cloud, edge network, a lock-in AWS infra) is difficult to engage. @pfrazee 😂

The bluesky team declared that it could be described as a hybrid federated network with p2p characteristics and focusing on self-authenticating identities and data.
* Basically, bsky is hosted on AWS, providing Personal Data Server (PDS) Service. *

DWeb Camp 2022: A Grounded Convening of Those Building a Decentralized, Values-Driven Web | Internet...

So am I. I was wondering if many of the infra owners saddled with some infectious p2p-cause at Camp Navarro.

The Anti-Parler: Principles for decentralized social networking Last year, the Beaker Browser team spent 6 months on a p2p social network. We dropped it when we realized that we hadn’t solved the hard…

It seems like they hadn’t solved “p2p tweets.” 🥲

There is a discord server for Bluesky/ATProto developers. Maybe developers working on the same AT Protocol Implementations are willing to share invite codes with others.
