Better known under its US title NIGHT SCHOOL, the Rachel Ward slasher was released as TERROR EYES in the UK, 1980 through 1981. Perhaps unsurprisingly, UK critics tried to raise the spectre of The Yorkshire Ripper. This helped land the film on the infamous video nasties list a few years later.
None of this is to endorse Rowling BTW, obvs I’m against her. But I think if you want to eat away at Harry Potters market, you need to know what made it so appealing for kids. And once you do that, you can introduce competitors that can eat its lunch. Like introducing a carnivorous species lmao.
She gave kids alot of stuff to play with. Spells that were fun to say that gave them all sorts of powers. A fun playful Myers-Briggs psychometric in the form of the houses. And for introverted, bullied, and marginalized kids, a place for them to escape to when life got too hard.
She gave young minds a lot of stuff to play with that helped make a relatively ‘boring‘ medium much more engaging. ‘Sectumsempura‘, ‘Wingardium Leviosa’, ‘Avada Kadavera’, ‘Expecto Patronum’ etc. For kids, these are really fun to say and hear. It’s like this for characters and locations too.
Rowling also chose the right genre, mystery. Literature isn’t a medium that’s audio-visual. Especially for fantasy, it relies almost exclusively on the strength of your own imagination. Making it a mystery was a way to keep the kids engaged as they mentally constructed their own version of Hogwarts.
Theres actually a lot of reasons why HP was a massive success. A big part is due to its medium and genre. For a lot of kids Rowling made the act of reading books fun for her audience, she played with attributes such as language and found a way to make it engaging for kids to read out loud.
