🔥Our next Campfire is Friday March 6th at 14:00 CET!🔥
With Kai Bröker, we'll explore in-situ stress characterization at depth and what it means for safe subsurface operations, including CO₂ injection.

Due to a high volume of #EGU26 abstract submissions, you may need to queue before making your submission. We are monitoring the queue & thank you for your patience. If you get 'looped' back to the start of the queue, don’t continue to wait - email immediately.
👉 For help email: egu26@copernicus.org
They will also send you an email every 2 days to make sure you do not forget to do it...
One of the many reasons I do not review for MDPI journals anymore.
One of my PhD students got a review of a manuscript back which included this section.... so no human checked the figures? Publishers should really check for #AI use in the peer-review process. ⚒️ #AcademicSky

You can do this right now:
Think of a person who wrote a paper you love, whose work influenced or helped you, or has made your professional life better.
Search up their email address. Shoot them a quick email of thanks. It means so, so much. This is a rough time of year, share some joy.
What could be the reason that people teaching and researching at universities have so little sickness days in Germany compared to everyone else? Probably nothing to do with precarious contracts, pressure to publish, or that no-one can cover for you. #IchBinHanna @amreibahr.bsky.social @zeit.de
Exciting news! 📢 We have a PhD opening working with us at Utrecht University. www.uu.nl/en/organisat...
We are looking for a keen researcher to dive into Unravelling Clogging Mechanisms in Porous and Fractured Rocks. 🪨✨
We’ll be using 4D µCT imaging to see inside rocks in real-time.

Our first speaker is Entela Kane (TU Delft & Utrecht University), who will explore how fluid chemistry influences strength, friction, and failure in carbonate reservoirs.

Over 2/3 of primary energy is wasted as heat.
The transition isn’t about matching that waste — it’s about outperforming it with efficient clean energy technology.
Screenshot of my raspishake seismometer signal after the M3.4 earthquake in Groningen, Netherlands
Tonight, the Groningen region in the Netherlands was shaken by a magnitude 3.4 #earthquake, according to KNMI. This is the biggest eq in the region in the past 6 years. Here's the seismogram from my Raspishake in Herne, Germany, 211 km away from the epicenter. 🧪⚒️ #Geology
@raspishake.bsky.social
Peak Ground Acceleration was up to 0.09 g, more typical for magnitude 4.7-5 earthquakes. Note that this is an area where buildings are not build with earthquakes in mind.
It seems administrative burdens are deeply anchored in academia for quite some time...
Not sure why this is on Nature - it nothing to do with Google Scholar, it is a browser addon which analyses GoogleScholar data. It was put on a preprint server by four Biotechnology scientists who have not published about metrics before.
Also it makes just as much sense as all other metrics.
📄 Abstract submission for #EGU26 is now open!

This week in #FutureFriday:
CO₂ storage isn’t one-size-fits-all 🌍. This new paper by Shi Yuan Toh et al. highlights critical implications for monitoring design and site-selection in future CCS projects, showing why strategies must adapt to geology and reservoir conditions. doi.org/10.1144/geoe...
I’m ready for a fight: figures belong in-line in manuscripts for peer review. No exceptions.
#FutureFriday - new ECS paper:
⚡ 3 in 4 geothermal projects are successful! New insights from 256 geothermal projects show that smarter planning and monitoring can unlock even more reliable sustainable energy.

Amazing chart on hydrogen.
If *every* *project* currently announced proceeds globally in ten years we will have enough green hydrogen to ... replace existing grey hydrogen.
Nothing for transport
Nothing for industry
Nothing for heating
Electrification is the way.

It has been four years since I moved to the Netherlands! It took some adjusting, but there are things I wouldn't want to miss anymore, with the cycling infrastructure being one of them :-)
This is mind-blowing! I have never seen footage of the slip that occurs during an earthquake! Here you see the slip that occurred during the Myanmar earthquake. 🤯

Our latest research is hot off the press! ⚒️
We've captured amazing footage of #Hydrogen gas moving through #Rock in real-time - think of it like making a movie of something that normally happens deep underground where no one can see it.

Thanks to everyone I interacted with at #egu25! There were many inspiring, fun moments that sparked my scientific curiosity - and now I am very tired.. Until next year!
Why are the division signs missing in the poster halls this year @egu.eu ? It made navigating the poster halls easier! #labyrinth #posters
I have been doing poster safaris at EGU for over 10 years! Overall posters have come a long way, but still not where they should be... see below for a snapshot from 11 years ago. Keep up the good work!

Today at #egu25 I have seen 5 very good #posters (out of a thousand?), some good ones and many not so good ones. 🫣🤯 #scicom #failure
@drlperezdiaz.bsky.social maybe you should tell egu to use the strong language that you mentioned yesterday...
Join our session "Secure #subsurface #storage for a Carbon-Neutral Future" at #EGU25 this afternoon from 14.00-17:30 in room -2.31! Posters are from 10:45-12.30 in hall X4.
Join us for Iman's award lecture today at 14:00 in room -2.31!
