The Edinburgh Minute ⏰ Wednesday 15 April 2026 🌤️ Good morning Edinburgh. The city's most comprehensive local **_Record Store Day_** preview is in this week's Culture Minute, dropping in subscribers' inboxes later today... Also, a reader gave feedback yesterday that the newsletters have been a bit top-heavy with crime recently. I usually include the crime reports from a 'safety-first' perspective, but it doesn't need to always go first. As today's lighter on news again, I'll mix it up a bit and leave the crime until a few items down. Feedback is always welcome. Here’s Wednesday's**Edinburgh Minute**. Edinburgh Corporation Transport : bus route map : 1961 - 62 : North Edinburgh. A scan of a section of the Edinburgh Corporation Transport Department's bus map that was for many years issued in a folding style and based on Bartholomew's base street map of the city with routes and terminal points overprinted. This is formally dated to 1961 - 62.

This scan covers the city centre and shows routes radiating North, primarily towards Leith, Newhaven, Granton, Pilton and Muirhouse. These latter suburbs were growing at the time due to the continued construction of many new council house schemes in these areas. The map also covers the inner suburbs of Canonmills, Stockbridge, Comely Bank, Blackhall and Davidson's Mains.

This is formally dated to 1961 - 62.

This scan shows the north eastern section of the map; this covers from Newhaven in the west, through Leith and across through Craigentinny towards Portobello and Eastfield. In the south it covers Duddingston with the bulk of Holyrood Park and a section of the East End of the city centre. This appears to be the last edition of the map to carry "Stanley Road" as a destination before being usurped by Newhaven; Stanley Road was the tram destination. The rather artifical termini of the 15, 25, 26 and 44 at Joppa and Eastfield show the effect of the city boundary. In later years the 44 was extended to the turning circle at Joppa to allieviate the turning at Magdalene Bridge on the main A1. In tramway years the Corporation's tram routes had continued east through Portobello and to Levenhall but with abandonment the replacement bus services were handed over to Eastern Scottish. It was only in later bus de-regulation days that Lothian, ECT's successor, ran back into East Lothian.

Looking forward to #Edinburgh VoI improvements:

Hope fully it expands geographical coverage quickly!

That the city sees the explosion in use and designated parking spaces on road instead of on pavement where possible.

That there are more spaces - they are often full!

Parked VoI bike in Edinburgh.

What’s certain in #Edinburgh is that this spring and summer, there’s going to be an explosion in Voi bike use. It’s simple, easy and often the quickest way to get around.

But the ideal would be to have it integrated with buses and trams capped fares.

Due to myriad reasons, women move through the city much differently than men.

Care trips, access to public transport, perceived safety, and vibrant public spaces all impact where and how women travel.

We can take a more proactive approach to creating gender equal mobility, where everyone benefits!

Retail parks are more profitable for retailers because they are cheap sites which externalise the costs. We all pay for the huge road infrastructure serving them and the harms that arise from car-dependent society.
