The new Water Lane crossing is shaping up to be a game-changer for Newham. Love the clever diagonal design connecting Maryland to Forest Gate—prioritising people, cycles, and sustainable drainage with those new rain gardens. 🌿🚲

Almost at the finish line! #Newham #HealthyStreets #ActiveTravel

People outside the borough are impressed with what’s been delivered over the last few years. Let’s hope that whoever is our mayor this time next year continues in the same vein! Walking & cycling improvements make the borough a better place!

Low-traffic schemes aren’t so toxic, after all LTNs became a culture-war battleground but the evidence now is that people rather like them

I email parking enforcement most days with pictures of cars parked illegally outside Colegrave School. They know this is happening. V frustrating as I think it must be politics blocking proper enforcement of these rules.

Good point. Wider appeal maybe 🤔 He does make it clear he’s a driver not a cyclist. Hopefully we can change that!!!

Our letter to Mayoral candidates asks for a review of designated pavement parking in the borough & enforcement of illegal pavement parking.
In this latest blog @martinwarne.net clearly sets out the issues.

Finally a mayoral candidate not talking about going backwards on cars! We’d like more details on what this review would involve, but it’s a promising start!

Good to see Met Police out enforcing safer speeds in Newham this morning.

Speed is a factor in over 50% of fatal collisions in London.

We’ve set up a new a Road Danger Reduction police team to make London’s roads safer for all.

Earlier this month, the Welsh Government gave local authorities new powers to introduce zebra crossings nationwide🦓

Over 1000 supporters have urged Westminster and Holyrood to roll out side road zebra crossings in England and Scotland. Will you join them? https://bitly.livingstreets.org.uk/4synvBs

Last night, Newham Labour blocked the opportunity to debate the borough's car parking restrictions at the final full council meeting before the election.

The reason is because they cannot defend their ridiculous flagship policy to de facto abolish car parking restrictions across Newham. 1/

Dude, where’s my car? With the main contenders in May’s elections desperately trying to outbid each other to win the votes of car drivers – free residential parking permits, an hour (or two!) of free parking every…

We recently shared @martinwarne.net’s article about the real cost of ‘free’ parking. This latest article analyses where car ownership in the borough sits. So why is parking such an issue in these elections?

Last night at the final full council meeting before the elections, the council prevented @newhamgreens.bsky.social members from bringing their very well laid out motion about parking.
Is this because of the promises of free parking permits being offered by some Mayoral candidates?

More of London's roads will have safer speed limits because there's irrefutable evidence it saves lives:

📉 25% fewer main road collisions
📉 34% fewer people killed or serious injured on local roads
📉 75% fall in children killed on local roads

You are five times more likely to survive being hit by a driver doing 20mph vs a driver doing 30mph.

Great to see Enfield rolling out new life saving 20mph zones.

Slow down. Slower speeds save lives. #VisionZeroLDN.

Pavement Parking is a real problem in Newham where so much clutters pavements & it’s a challenge for those in wheelchairs, with buggies & sometimes just walking. Excellent to see it’s being tackled! We look forward to seeing the evidence in our borough!

Introduction by Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE
Public Health, Political Accountability, and the Future of Newham's Streets
Newham stands at a lethal crossroads. Literally. Despite boasting one of the lowest rates of car ownership in London - with fewer than half of our residents owning a private vehicle - our borough suffers the most toxic air in the Capital.
This environmental injustice is fuelled by 596 million vehicle miles being driven in Newham in 2024, an increase of 42 million from the year before, much of it driven by commuters using our residential neighbourhoods as high-speed conduits. The human cost is staggering: 115 deaths every year and 4,500 children hospitalised with severe respiratory conditions. To govern Newham is to confront a crisis where the simple act of breathing has become a hazard. This cannot be ignored and to do so is unconscionable.

Great news - despite being sent for scrutiny, the West Ham Park low traffic scheme will now be made permanent. Some powerful words from Mayor Fiaz in her introduction 💥
