It’s not just about those who’ve driven dangerously, it’s about those who should not drive due to health and face giving their license up with horror, due to perceived loss of independence.
We need to design our towns and cities so driving is optional #ActiveTravel
Same with #ActiveTravel - we have regs that make it harder to deliver safe infra, which in turn deters #ModalShift, which worsens congestion, which slows traffic…
🚌 Late March we co-hosted a bus ride with OPT for the Fairview community! Riders explored the Orange Loop, got route info, enjoyed Locopops, and received bikes, helmets & lights. 🚲
Transportation equity is neighbors knowing their routes, their options, and each other. 🤝

Red and black Voi hire bicycle with a small basket at the front. A small purple shoulder bag is in the basket. The bicycle is stationary and on a shared path which soon becomes a wide path for people with a 3m 2 way cycle path. There is a buffer and then a one way car lane with parking. It is by the sea
Screenshot from an activity app showing a 727m cycle. There is a map showing the path follows Southampton Common and the sea
Just cycled a whopping 727m - yes, you did read that correctly - along Portsmouth's shiny new cycle path! Lovely path. Frustrating #ActiveTravel infrastructure currently (& illogically) ends so abruptly....
Hopefully here it'll improve once more of the seawall is rebuilt 🤞
That’s why it’s so important that people get involved in #ActiveTravel campaign groups, whether that’s within political parties such as @libdemcycling.org.uk or @labourwalkscycles.bsky.social, or non-aligned such as @walkridegm.org.uk, @londoncycling.bsky.social or @camcycle.bsky.social
Most people are broadly in favour of #ActiveTravel as if nothing else less traffic makes our towns and cities nicer, but it’s hard for our politicians to hold their nerve in the face of an aggressive and shouty minority
(Another recommendation for @peterwalker99.bsky.social’s book on how increased everyday walking and cycling keep people healthier and independent for longer #TheMiraclePill #ActiveTravel)
On a tangent, when the astonishing health benefits of increased walking, wheeling & cycling are well-established, the very limited focus on #ActiveTravel in the #IntegratedTravelStrategy is yet another missed opportunity #TheMiraclePill

That seems like a massive missed opportunity, though given this in the supporting documentation that shouldn’t be a surprise #ActiveTravel
Greater Stitchwort with 10 white petals and yellow stamens and sepals. In amongst grass and nettles
Ground-ivy with little purple flowers and hairy jagged edges leaves
A pink Fumitories species which I haven't identified. It has a series of long thin flowers which are pink with a deeper colour at the top
White tree blossoms
Lots to enjoy while running errands (or rather walking!) including Greater Stitchwort and Ground-ivy. Walked the long way round to the library for change of scene which had added bonus of 2 unexpected Cetti's Warblers 🙂 #WildflowerHour #ActiveTravel
Your occasional reminder that people who walk or cycle to work take fewer sick days. Why can’t we have a scheme like this? #TheMiraclePill #ActiveTravel
The Government of Trinidad and Tobago is wilfully blind to #ActiveTravel! Fully committed to car dependency in a tiny place that can easily be served by proper public transit and safe active travel infrastructure! #LeadershipMatters #PoliticalWill #EndCarDependency #MobilityIsEquity
A cargo bike can replace up to 50% of car trips. But sales in the UK last year were <5% of those up in Germany - lack of safe #ActiveTravel infrastructure is holding back what is a cheap and oil-independent mode of transport #CostOfLiving #PetrolPrices @walkridegm.org.uk
It’s just crap this. We *know* that the return on investment for #ActiveTravel is huge and yet, over and over again, the funding comes in penny packets @chrisboardman.bsky.social @ategov.bsky.social
I’ll defer to your knowledge as you live there but this is the same France which invented the biggest bike race of them all, where they’ve converted their capital city from being traffic choked to an #ActiveTravel leader, and where there’s that famous film of a nun giving it the beans on a descent?

Thanks to people screaming on Facebook, the political will to build decent infrastructure isn’t there, even if there was funding, which there isn’t, despite #ActiveTravel being astonishingly cost effective.
This lack of political leadership has failed us now we are in a #CostOfLiving crisis.
Where are the pandemic-style pop-up #ActiveTravel lanes to make it easier for people to get about independent of #PetrolPrices?
It’s lack of infrastructure, isn’t it? #ActiveTravel @walkridegm.org.uk
Don’t know what it’s like in N America but over here there’s good evidence that business owners consistently massively overestimate the number of customers who come by car? #ActiveTravel
"I may not always get agreement, but I’m not sure that anyone wants a mayor who’s going to sacrifice their principles.” Could have been an April Fools joke - there are few men less principled than Fillmore given how his principles have shifted on #ActiveTravel www.halifaxexaminer.ca/government/c...
We're doing this crazy math in tiny Trinidad! Choking ourselves with motor vehicles on an island that's 50 miles x 37 miles! #CarBrain #MobilityIsEquity #PublicTransit #ActiveTravel #PoliticalWill #LeadershipMatters #BadMath
What we’re lacking is a means of targeting fuel duty relief to those in rural areas without simultaneously incentivising driving in urban areas where most car journeys are under 3 miles and there are (or should be) decent public transport or #ActiveTravel alternatives.
Recent DfT report defining that cheaper private car use is a cause of #InducedDemand
Cutting the cost of alternatives to private car use is absolutely the right policy, but there’s no mention of #ActiveTravel despite this being in line with our core values.
We absolutely do not want the #InducedDemand that goes with cheaper private car use #EvidenceBasedPolicy
