(Another recommendation for @peterwalker99.bsky.social’s book on how increased everyday walking and cycling keep people healthier and independent for longer #TheMiraclePill #ActiveTravel)
On a tangent, when the astonishing health benefits of increased walking, wheeling & cycling are well-established, the very limited focus on #ActiveTravel in the #IntegratedTravelStrategy is yet another missed opportunity #TheMiraclePill

Your occasional reminder that people who walk or cycle to work take fewer sick days. Why can’t we have a scheme like this? #TheMiraclePill #ActiveTravel
Staying active keeps you independent for longer #TheMiraclePill
#TheMiraclePill @walkridegm.org.uk
#ActiveTravel really is #TheMiraclePill and we need to start treating it as a public health measure to address the inactivity pandemic as much as anything else.
The NHS cannot afford us not to
The best way of helping people do this is to build activity into every day life, and the best way of doing that is to invest in #ActiveTravel. We cannot afford not to do this #TheMiraclePill
There’s even a book about it #TheMiraclePill
To paraphrase a past mayor of Copenhagen we can’t afford not to invest in #ActiveTravel. And yet…
Even if the criticism is people using bikes at the weekend for leisure rather than the intended commuting, making the population more active reduces sick days, reduces pressure on healthcare and keeps people independent for longer #TheMiraclePill
Car subsidies, meanwhile… #CycleToWork
Use of C2W funded bikes for leisure isn’t a great look, but it’s gone on since the scheme was founded & there‘s a societal benefit in terms of better health, fewer sickdays, longer independence etc of people being more active #TheMiraclePill
Salary sacrifice for EVs does none these things…
And as both @owlernook.bsky.social and @salfordmh.bsky.social have said, any exercise is better than none, and the returns appear to ramp up quite quickly and then diminish.
@peterwalker99.bsky.social's book #TheMiraclePill is excellent if you've not read it.
This is why #LivableNeighbourhoods are so important - unless we give people the choice to embed activity into everyday living, we’re giving them no choice to be active at all.
#InactivityPandemic #TheMiraclePill
This is essentially preventative healthcare they’ve cut here. #TheMiraclePill
Good to see @theguardian.com making this point about exercise, but it’s disappointing to see it couched in terms of gyms and exercise plans, rather than building activity into everyday life with #LivableNeighbourhoods, #ActiveTravel infrastructure and #SchoolStreets.
#TheMiraclePill
(On a tangent, #TheMiraclePill by @peterwalker99.bsky.social is worth a read and reinforces the idea that preventative healthcare makes more of a difference than I ever will…)
The thing is we probably know what we need to do - more walking, wheeling and cycling, and less time being sedentary (eg. in a car). But this needs political will #TheMiraclePill
It’s not just about this though. Creating walkable/cyclable neighbourhoods also keep people active, which keeps them independent for longer #SocialCareCrisis
We cannot afford *not* to invest in walking & cycling
#ActiveTravel #TheMiraclePill
Just reading @peterwalker99.bsky.social’s #TheMiraclePill and utility cycling is better exercise than you’re giving it credit for.
Wouldn’t want to do the Mad Manc on a Gazelle town bike mind you.
Let me tell you about a book called #TheMiraclePill… @peterwalker99.bsky.social
Excellent piece by @peterwalker99.bsky.social on the proposed Birmingham cycling ban, and the need to promote #ActiveTravel and its health benefits #TheMiraclePill
Also raised important points about the delivery companies, whose business model relies on illegal e-motorbikes.
