How can we study the functional ecology of marine animal forest with a 25 meters square field of PVC tubes placed at 30 meters depth?
Check this article to know more on this bizarre experiment.

Our small #thermometers will measure #temperature down to 55 m depth over 6 months. Precise hourly measures will contribute to understand #climatechange. Though unspectacular, these instruments are vital in advancing #science

Very exciting event in Wageningen next week! Join if you are interested in marine animal forests and their ecology or if you are simply interested in hearing what this is all about.
CNN broadcasts DEEPLIFE. Led by CNRS & Sorbonne Université, scientists focus on mesophotic animal forests.
With Under The Pole handling underwater operations, we combine cutting-edge science & exploration to understand and protect oceans.

The Gorgonian Eater
Hermodice carunculata (the fireworm), is devouring a branch of the yellow gorgonian Leptogorgia viminalis. With its powerful jaws, it can feed even on the tough skeleton of the gorgonian, leaving unmistakable traces of its passage

“Once you have a garden, you have a future…” – Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden
In La Gomera,
underwater gorgonian gardens are mainly composed by Leptogorgia viminalis and ruberrima.
These “gardens” play an essential role in marine ecosystems, providing shelter for diverse marine life.

There is no cure for coral bleaching, only prevention - stop burning fossil fuels.

Corallium rubrum is a Mediterranean flagship species in decline due to overfishing and climate change. We developed artificial caves to run controlled experiments on growth and reproduction in semi natural conditions. Results provide crucial insights for effective restoration strategies.
Orange gorgonian often takes a backseat to its beautiful relative, the red gorgonian. However, Leptogorgia holds significant intrigue due to its impressive resilience to rising temperatures. Our research aims at unravelling the mysteries behind this resistance.
Mediterranean gorgonians seek refuge from marine heatwaves in the mesophotic zone. But this deep refuge is only temporary. We must use this extra gift of time to study these marine forests, implement conservation, and start reducing CO2 emissions.
