An agent's guide to The "Evil" Fairy
A fantasy novel by Julia LaFond
The background is a tessellation of white butterfies and yellow-green vines.
Pitch
SHREK starring MALIFICENT
The fairy Rancoria pretends to be evil to get out of parties. Then she learns a king's new bride is an evil witch who intends to murder her way to the throne. To avoid breaking character, Rancoria decides to save the pre-teen princess by kidnapping her—realizing too late she's just adopted a houseguest.
Excerpt
...No sense putting it off any further than that, so I appeared before the intruders in a puff of smoke.
The knights screamed, cowering back from me. One even tripped into a patch of mud.
I cackled with all the glee I could muster. “Fools! Who are you to trespass upon my domain?”
“Wicked creature!” proclaimed the man closest to me. Tall and thin, with long black hair and polished armor, his shield bore the crest of the Wintermount Kingdom. “I, Prince Gallien, have come to rid the world of your evil!”
The knights straightened up, raising their swords and voices in agreement.
“Do not think your corrupted power will save you,” he continued, subtly moving his shoulders so his cape fluttered in the breeze. “No matter what horrors you’ve filled this fetid swamp with—”
“You dare?” I called down lightning, drowning out his insults with thunder. Marshlands were essential for clean water and provided a home for many kinds of animals, yet humans insisted on treating them as if they were noxious, evil places that ought to be wiped from the face of the earth.
Not that I could say that part aloud.
“Leave this place at once,” I intoned, “else your lives are forfeit.”

Honorable Mention
[H]is ideas of how to “vanquish” me included: stealing my “spellbook” (an ordinary cookbook); disguising himself as my “mother” and sternly lecturing me about my wrongdoing (forgetting fairies don’t have parents); and my personal favorite: goading me into cursing him and trying to use an ordinary mirror to reflect it back at me.
