New Mexico Communities : History of Gallup | Railroad to Route 66 At the crossroads of culture and travel, the history of Gallup can be traced back 1000s of years to the earliest inhabitants of this region.

"Gallup started as a dusty, isolated Westward Overland Stagecoach stop. False storefronts & wooden sidewalks lined a single dirt road. That road eventually ran next to the railroad tracks, becoming Main Street, as well as a stretch of historic Route 66."
