What's cooler than a sea slug? A SOLAR POWERED SEA SLUG!!!

Elysia viridis are kleptoplasts, retaining chloroplasts from the algae they consume and using them for photosynthesis.

These two specimens were found in the rockpools at Filey, on a shore search survey with @yorkswildlife.bsky.social

I think we're about at peak bluebell in this part of South Yorkshire at the moment.

A great time for a walk in the woods, perhaps @yorkswildlife.bsky.social Sprotbrough Flash or Hetchell Wood would be worth a visit this weekend

A few patches of St George's Mushroom today. They were in fields that were arable until about 20 years ago, so it must be a reasonably good coloniser (as some grassland species are almost exclusively associated with very old grassland).

Butterfly numbers are dropping but here are five species you may see more of A warming climate has helped some to flourish, researchers say, but the outlook is troubling.

🦋 When nature loses diversity, we all lose.
Some butterflies are coping better than others, but our State of Yorkshire’s Nature evidence is clear: rare and specialist species are most at risk.
Protecting diverse habitats is the key to a nature‑rich Yorkshire.

Two people wearing waterproof outdoor clothing are working on a slope of bare peat in an upland landscape. One person is bending down to install equipment in the exposed peat, while the other stands nearby holding materials. Several plastic pipes and coloured markers are laid out across the dark peat surface. The surrounding area is covered with rough, grassy vegetation and rolling moorland.

@yorkshirepeat.bsky.social is trialling a new technique to address patches of steep bare peat, known as hags, using sheep fleece. Hags are tricky to restore as it's difficult to establish any vegetation to stabilise the peat.

Equinox energy has arrived in Yorkshire! 🌓

Today feels a bit like nature hitting reset. So if you can, step outside for five quiet minutes. Breathe. Notice what’s stirring.

Chasing a sunset tonight? Yorkshire’s coast does it best! 🌅

The stars aligned and I was able to go for a long lunchtime walk to Adel Dam and Golden Acre Park. Beautiful spring weather. 36 bird species and a surprise bat over water (Daubenton’s?). My first chiffchaffing heard this year and first little egret seen. @yorkswildlife.bsky.social

Also it’s the first time we’ve seen golden plover here.
