Haarlem, NL.

When they built an underground bike parking garage by the station they turned the old bike parking into a new public square. Then they removed motor traffic from the main road & made it a cycleway, with a bus-only road alongside.

Cities get nicer when you design for people, not cars.

🌊BGC-Argo float of the month is 5906497 with 4 years under Antarctic sea ice, just popped out. It was adopted by the American School in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and named “Hedy Lamarr” – the actress who co-invented and patented frequency hopping communications.  Named for her science contribution. 1/2

(b) Long-term NPP trends (Gg C year−1) averaged across the Southern Ocean for the full time series (darker shade) and a jackknife resampling of the full time series (1998–2024) as a moving 20-year record with the mean trends ± the standard deviation reported (lighter shade).

#WeekendReading: Liu et al. on how the ratio between carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the oceans has changed over the last fifty years. Redfield seems (as it has been for a while now) an assumption that has to be verified for each case study. 🧪🌊

Heard this one? The City of Barcelona traded 3 lanes of vehicle traffic for an exceptional 4.7km green pedestrian corridor in the heart of the Eixample grid. Businesses sued, & eventually won in court. Then they admitted that they actually like the change.
