The No Kings organizers have highlighted the need to both block AND build: BLOCK by taking concrete action against authoritarianism NOW; and BUILD by building LONG-TERM organizing power.

I'll call out examples of both from the site in this thread (but please also check out the site!):

A series of tweets from Politico senior legal affairs reporter Kyle Cheney:

BREAKING: A federal judge in Massachusetts (the Reagan-appointed William Young) has declared the Trump administration's cuts to NIH grants — ostensibly over Trump's EOs on gender ideology and DEI — are "illegal" and "void." He's ordering many grants restored.

YOUNG: "I am hesitant to draw this conclusion, but I have an unflinching obligation to draw it – that this represents racial discrimination. And discrimination against America’s LGBTQ community. That’s what this is. I would be blind not to call it out. My duty is to call it out."

MORE YOUNG: "It is palpably clear that these directives and the set of terminated grants here also are designed to frustrate, to stop, research that may bear on the health – we’re talking about health here, the health of Americans, of our LGBTQ community. That’s appalling."

YOUNG still going: "I’ve never seen a record where racial discrimination was so palpable. I’ve sat on this bench now for 40 years. I’ve never seen government racial discrimination like this ... I ask myself, how can this be?"

"I have the protection that the founders wrote into the constitution, along with imposing upon me a duty to speak the truth in every case. I try to do that. What if I didn’t have those protections. What if my job was on the line, my profession... Would I have stood up against all this? Would I have said, 'you can’t do this?' You are bearing down on people of color because of their color. The constitution will not permit that."

"Have we fallen so low? Have we no shame?"

No Kings Day was one of the largest days of protest in US history. From deep red small towns to our largest cities, millions of people turned out to make it clear that the American people will not bow to fascism. #NoKings

No Kings On June 14—Flag Day—Donald Trump wants tanks in the street and a made-for-TV display of dominance for his birthday. A spectacle meant to look like strength. But real power isn’t staged in Washington. ...

Find your closest rally on Saturday and go. You can tell your kids where you were on the other side of this. Outnumber him everywhere.

Hi! Do you want to rip your face off over the constant attacks on science in the US? Here are some actions you can take! They require varying amounts of time, repetitiveness, and sticking your neck out, so hopefully you can find something in here that’s right for you:

I said it would get worse very quickly. By tomorrow we will have completed the most dangerous & frightening 24 hours thus far of Trump 2.0. Just to name a few:
1. Defiance of a court order by sending migrants to Sudan without due process (despite clear DP decision SCOTUS) & Dist. CT. order.

Trying to understand whether, why, when, and how to take a public stand? It's scary, and difficulty — particularly the how part. I found @philipncohen.com's recent book extremely useful in this regard, for social scientists and natural scientists alike.

Rapid Response Bridge Funding Program In the face of recent abrupt shifts in federal funding for education research, including large-scale terminations of National Science Foundation (NSF) research grant awards, we have developed a rap...

FYI: The Spencer Foundation, Kapor Foundation, The William T. Grant Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation have collaborated to offer $25K rapid response grants.

"This rapid response bridge funding opportunity is for scholars and teams whose grants have recently been cancelled by NSF."

To your question about my supposed fear of change: I am not afraid of change or sociotechnical innovation. What I am afraid of is how change and innovation take place under the conditions set by capitalism and a variety of other oppressive structures which developers refuse to recognize as salient.

Letter to the Editor: Academic Freedom

The Trump administration is attempting to bully higher education into submission, by using intimidation and threats to dictate what can be taught (and who deserves a seat at the table). Harvard has decided to take a forceful stand for academic freedom, and several other colleges are now following suit. The University of Pennsylvania must do the same. As a scientist, I’ve learned firsthand how fundamentally valuable it is to listen and learn from diverse perspectives in the pursuit of knowledge. If the administration truly had the country’s best interests in mind, it would be actively fostering an environment where conflicting viewpoints can be boldly shared and constructively grappled with.

Instead, they are threatening universities to close their diversity, equity and inclusion programs, and demanding an “audit” of student perspectives. This will only stifle free speech and force out some of our brightest talents, not make campuses safer. But of course, trampling on free speech is their end goal. So now is not the time to bend a knee in the hopes that things will blow over. Now is the time for universities (including Penn) to take collective action in defense of higher education.

If you want to dip your toes into @sciencehomecoming.bsky.social’s op-ed writing initiative, you could try writing Letters to the Editor to your local papers (~150-200 word short pieces) on timely issues that matter to you! Here’s an example of an LTE on academic freedom from me

Small colleges have taken the lead -- but they are now joined by 6 of 8 Ivies: Cornell, Penn, Princeton, Yale, Brown, and -- yes -- Harvard.

And, finally, by a handful of big publics: U. of Washington, Wisconsin, Rutgers, SUNY Buffalo and Stony Brook, UC Riverside, UVa, UMD.

Imagine that the Earth went to Art School and studied abroad in France and then did A LOT of cocaine. Ok you got it. (Just kidding- the earth is profusely sweating holding an artist's palette and a paintbrush, with their tongue sticking out and their eye twitching, while wearing a maroon beret, floating in between an easel with a canvas on it and the huge flames. The earth is thinking, via a thought bubble "Make stickers and wheatpastes encouraging climate action" and the title of the poster says Climate Change Crafting Night, and beneath the floating earth it says "Tattooed Mom, Sunday APril 6th 5pm, 21+ with valid I.D.

Everything is profoundly stupid. Like. So stupid, oh my god.

So, here's my proposal. Come have a beer with me tomorrow at tattooed mom's and make some street art about it.

We'll be focusing on climate change action messaging!

I have SO many paint pens. Come paint with me.
