Each year, Eastern North Pacific gray whales migrate >4K miles from the Arctic to calving grounds in Baja California. Before setting out, the whales gorge on crustaceans, storing up fat to complete the journey without stopping to feed. But as the Arctic warms and sea ice dwindles, so does food.

Chinook salmon found naturally hatching in Upper Klamath River for first time in a century The Klamath Tribes are celebrating evidence of Chinook salmon spawning in Klamath River tributary.

After big dams on the upper Klamath River in far northern CA were removed in 2024, Chinook (king) salmon migrated upstream for the first time in 100+ years--and now they have hatched.

US removes protections for rare whale species in Gulf of Mexico The United States government has removed legal protections for the Rice's whale, one of the world's rarest whale species.

Only around 50 of these whales are still alive, they all live in one area of the Gulf of Mexico.The decision was made last week by a special government committee. Officials said protecting the whales was interfering with oil and gas production in the gulf.

When forests are treated as assets to unlock rather than ecosystems to protect, the loss is deeper than trees—it’s livelihoods, biodiversity, and climate balance. Policy that ignores this trade-off risks irreversible damage in the name of development.
