In 2026, after collecting all the data, the researchers will finish the analysis and publish their report. They will continuously update the movement metrics as new data becomes available and make them accessible to everyone. Stay tuned: the paper is coming out soon!

To predict #AfricaSwineFever spread, we need unified knowledge of 🐗 behavior.
Last year, our researchers identified key behavior criteria and compared conditions, providing a Europe-wide overview of 🐗 movement and contact patterns relevant to ASF.
#AfricanSwineFever bites! Carcass removal works to contain the spread, thus @enetwild.com has released a review of methods to find and date wild boar carcasses zenodo.org/records/1759... as well as recommendations for carcass detection and dating in different environments zenodo.org/records/1759...
We're just getting started 💪
👀 Outlook to 2026:
After proving that eDNA works well in the pilot study, the next goal is to make it a routine and standardized tool for monitoring wildlife diseases.
Our researchers are working towards a trusted eDNA method that will fit into existing #WildlifeMonitoring programs.
🤔 Recap 2025:
Last year our researchers tested this approach in a pilot study in Croatia, Spain, and Portugal.
The results showed that combining #CameraTrap data with multiple eDNA methods greatly improved the detection of wildlife, insect vectors, and potential pathogens.
How can we monitor and forecast wildlife diseases without disturbing wildlife?
By using non-invasive methods. 🧬
One promising tool is environmental DNA (eDNA)

🔡Would you like to do more than promotion and help us make the app available in more languages?
We would love to have locals translate our #WildlifeMonitoring app to Bulgarian, Lithuanian, Hungarian, Romanian or other languages. Just send us a PM.
🗣️Please spread the word on iMammalia especially in Eastern Europe
Records there are much less than elsewhere (iMammalia(left) vs GBIF(right) since 2019), effecting the reliability of species abundance.
App available in ENG, ALB, CZE, ESP, FR, GER, GRC, HRV, IT, MKD, MNE, NOR, PL, PRT, SRB, SVK,UKR
We involve citizens in #WildlifeMonitoring & they have contributed 29000 verified records from 38 countries 📸🐇
In 2019, we launched the iMammalia app. Since then European citizens have been uploading photos or sightings of mammals that we verify and submit to the global database GBIF.

Bird flu can spread among vultures 🇪🇸🇫🇷
An analysis of the 2022 HPAI outbreak demonstrated that vultures may have facilitated a rapid, silent & cross-border spread of the virus on a regional scale.

Ilia State University, one of Georgia's leading institutions in biodiversity research, could experience complete disruption of existing research programmes and the dismantling of established scientific teams, reversing years of strategic investment, collaboration, and research progress.
Critics say the Georgian government’s proposed university reforms increase political influence rather than strengthen the higher education & research system.

Successful #WildlifeManagement involves scientists, hunters & many more!
We collaborate with scientists & hunters and produced the first calibrated estimates of wild boar density across Europe, offering a stronger basis for the risk assessment of #AfricanSwineFever.

🐦Bird flu
While many countries in 🇪🇺 see a higher number of HPAI outbreaks this season, Germany is by far the worse affected.
According to the Friedrich Loeffler Institute for Animal Diseases, the virus has been detected on 122 farms & in 1125 wild birds
