Local committee watchdogs should be aware that the Oregon Legislature recently passed a bill that guts your ability to do that. Currently @tinakotek.bsky.social sky.social is mulling whether to veto it so reasonable tweaks can happen, which @spjoregon.bsky.social supports. More: tinyurl.com/mpuxf2e6

Kudos to @tinakotek.bsky.social for listening to her own experts. They told her this bill would wipe out the fundamental expectation that Oregonians get to know the info leading to decisions by their government. Let's tweak existing law, not destroy transparency. @spjoregon.bsky.social #FOI

Michael, as I noted in a reply a minute ago, opponents of this bill agree💯 we need middle ground. But the Legislature seems to lack FOI champions it once had. So if you wipe out transparency and then try to fix it later, it's not going to happen. The idea of a veto is let's not destroy, let's fix.

Michael, with respect for your good work, opponents of this bill did not dispute that there's an issue. The problem is this bill goes further than necesary to fix it. As written it eliminates the fundamental expectation that Oregonians get to know the basis of decisions their government is making.

Bill could enable secret government talks, Oregon ethics chief warns A section that would provide broad exceptions to the public meetings law 'gives me heartburn,' said Susan Myers, executive director of the Oregon Government Ethics Commission.

A bill is advancing in Salem that would blow a hole in the public's right to know, according to the top official who protects Oregonians’ public meetings law, Susan Myers. @SPJOregon, @OPB and others strongly oppose #orleg #orpol #foia
