Eurasian Blue Tit pecking open a poppy seed pod to get at the seeds. Common behaviour in that part of south Cheshire in the 1980s although apparently little documented. Around 40 years later an American naturalist observed American Goldfinches doing the same thing and suddenly it was interesting and unique behaviour.
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Petals&Perches. A juvenile Eurasian Blue Tit pecking open a poppy seed pod in a south #Cheshire garden. More details in the alt text.

A Red-flanked Bluetail perched on a thin tree branch, facing right. The bird shows an orange wash on the flank, a pale belly, olive-brown upperparts, and a distinct blue tail. The background is softly blurred, with intersecting bare branches around the subject. 細い枝にとまって右を向くルリビタキ。脇にオレンジ色が入り、腹部は淡色、上面はオリーブ褐色で、尾は青い。背景は大きくぼけており、周囲に葉のない枝が交差している。
I went out looking for a Stonechat, but ended up finding a Red-flanked Bluetail instead — guess “Bluetail” works for today’s #BirdOfTheDay #ABCD 😄🪶
