adventure games from the 80s were intentionally designed to be tricky, mean and occasionally counterintuitive so that you could get stuck for long periods of time. this was called “value for your dollar”

The way that the original PCjr release of King's Quest (1984) draws and then 'paints in' each scene element in the same way that golf games and graphic text adventures often do due to technical limitations is very pleasing to watch.

A photo of John Romero in 1993 at what looks to be a 486 PC on a wide corner desk, with the DoomED program open that they used to build levels with. He's looking back with a big grin and sporting a killer mullet.

Happy 35th birthday, id Software - In Demand since 1991!

Born in the wake of leaving diskmag publisher Softdisk and going it alone under Apogee's wing and initially called Ideas From The Deep, id initially had one mission: commercial quality games at shareware prices.

Making Catacomb 3-D YouTube video by John Romero

To celebrate id Software’s 35th birthday, @johnromero.bsky.social produced a great mini-doc on the making of Catacomb 3D (1991) – and it really illustrates just how foundational this game was for their later, more influential first person shooter work: youtu.be/ZcUqwMf01pI?...

An image of Brenda Romero, Director Theresa Loong and John Romero during a shoot for the documentary about Brenda called Game On

An image of Brenda Romero, Director Theresa Loong and John Romero during a shoot for the documentary about Brenda called Game On

This photo means a lot to me. It was taken during a Game On shoot with Brenda and John Romero, people whose passion, generosity, and creativity left a lasting impression on me.

This film is a labor of love. It’s about creativity, courage, and what it means to build a career — and a life — in an industry that doesn’t always make space for everyone. Making it has reminded me why these stories matter, and why preserving them matters too.

We’re getting ready to launch our Kickstarter, and before we do, we’re hoping to reach 800 followers on the project page by February. Following doesn’t cost anything. You’ll be notified the moment we go live. It makes a huge difference in helping the campaign succeed.

If Brenda's work inspires you, if you care about the future of games, or if you believe stories like hers deserve to be told, I’d be so grateful if you’d take a moment to follow Game On on Kickstarter and share it with someone who might care, too.

Thank you for supporting indie films and games, and for helping us bring this story into the world. Theresa
