#Translation CPD in Edinburgh this coming Wednesday 11 March
Collage of photos from various ScotNet events showing people in various locations and doing different activities. The background shows bits of the ancient Birnam Oak, a sessile oak and the last remaining tree of Shakespeare's Birnam Wood, made famous by his work Macbeth.
From a small seed to a tree. At @itiscotnet.bsky.social we're celebrating our 35th anniversary. We're grateful to our founders and all the volunteers who've chipped in over the years to help this network grow, adapt and stay relevant. May we all continue to thrive for the next 35 years and more!
Gentle reminder to book your spot for our spring workshop before the 4th of March ๐บ๐ฅ๐ฏ๐ฃ

As a Scottish-based association of linguists, the news have hit us hard. Many of our members have links to Heriot-Watt, be it as former, current or potential future students or staff members, or as their colleagues.
Please sign the petition if you care about languages and the future of the UK. ๐
The Department of Languages at @heriotwattuni.bsky.social is facing serious cuts with a proposal to make 11 of its staff redundant, stop offering undergraduate Chinese and German and eliminate intercultural studies courses.

Collage of three photos, two square ones at the top and a landscape shaped under. The first one shows Victoria Street in Edinburgh with The Quaker Meeting House sign visible. The second one is a room showing a speaker next to a screen at the far end and people sitting around tables looking towards the speaker. The landscape photo shows the white blooms of snowdrops on their green stems.
It's dreich out there, but our spring workshop is coming!
On the 21st of March in Edinburgh, we'll discuss translation in the area of disaster risk reduction looking at languages and indigenous communities in Latin America, with Dr. Teresa Armijos Burneo.

Our planned events for 2026: pub gatherings in Edinburgh (last Thursday of each month); Spring workshop in Edinburgh on 21 March (about indigenous language); Walking Weekend in the Spey Valley on 8-10 May; Autumn workshop in Edinburgh (early October); AGM and Christmas lunch in Glasgow, 12 December.
A reddish sandy path lined with heath bushes lightly covered in snow stretches from the viewer towards the middle of the photo among green Scots pine with their characteristic red bark and grey-green lichens growing from the base upwards.
Happy New Year, @Scotnetters and followers! May 2026 be joyful and heathy, and bring you enjoyable and profitable work and learning opportunities, a clear mind to find them and lots of networking with clients and colleagues! ๐ค ๐

Greatly enjoyed today's @itiscotnet.bsky.social AGM and Christmas lunch. I love our get-togethers, if that's the right word for an AGM. Such lovely people!

When you struggle to find the equivalent of a word or phrase in another language, do you sometimes find yourself opening Wikipedia, searching for it then navigating to the "languages" section to get its title in the other language?
Well, I do, and I got tired of it, hence:

I'm looking for another authenticity/sensitivity reader, this time for dissociative identity disorder.
It's for feedback on a character in a graphic novel I'm translating.
Ideally they'd have experience with SR, comics, and historical fiction.
Got any recs?
