Data governance: “Can we trust the record?” #AI governance: “Can we trust the decision built on that record?” Without clear provenance of where data came from, how it was processed, & who it represents, we can’t judge bias or safety in AI.

In healthcare, that should be a hard stop.

So sad to learn out the passing of Peer Bork. I collaborated with his group at EMBL in the mid 2000’s. He leaves a lasting imprint on the fields of bioinformatics, metagenomics, and computational biology, and an enduring spirit of open, curiosity-driven exploration.

Massive, Unarchivable Datasets of Cancer, Covid, and Alzheimer's Research Could Be Lost Forever Days before Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that 10,000 HHS staffers would lose their jobs, a message appeared on NIH research repository sites saying they were "under review."

Petabytes of critical government research that is marked for possible deletion cannot be archived because of technical and legal restrictions, meaning it is very likely to be lost forever:

Caught in the crossfire: The critical threats facing cancer centers, research, and patient care - The Cancer Letter NCI-designated cancer centers and academic medical institutions (AMCs) are facing unprecedented threats that jeopardize their ability to conduct groundbreaking research, deliver cutting-edge care, and sustain clinical trials essential to patient treatment. Funding instability, including freezes on federal grants and sudden cuts to indirect cost rates, is creating a ripple effect that disrupts the entire cancer […]

"Protecting these institutions is vital—not just for scientific advancement but for the millions of patients who rely on them for hope and cutting-edge care," write Shannon McWeeney (@wondermixtape.bsky.social) and Sorena Nadaf-Rahrov
