I think the shortest version of why LLMs are an anti education technology is that education is fundamentally about making shared context to understand ourselves, each other, and the world

And by design LLMs destroy shared context

There is soon going to be an historical primary-source black hole for the past thirty years of human existence... if it doesn't exist already, of course.

A different take from me back in 2023...

(Not a perfect take, but something I've been thinking about a lot since I wrote these pretty high level / early thoughts)

🥶 Are we hurtling towards a quantum winter? 🥶

Had a great time chatting hype in quantum on @crackingquantum.bsky.social!

We touched on:
❄️ Too little or too much hype in quantum?
❄️ Alternative 'norms' for science-entrepreneurs
❄️ 'Spinning out, better': equitably, democratically, and for the many

Chaired by fab writer, researcher and pal @gemmamilne.bsky.social - we'll be discussing what happens when LGBTQ communities meet the categories, classifications and labels assigned to them!

Please (if you can) preorder a copy of the book with Lighthouse - it really helps! 📚

Yesss these are great!! And thanks :) It's for a keynote in Sept, so will put something out after... But yeah been thinking a lot about earnestness, audaciousness, flagrancy wrt those who 'work on' the future (writing up my thesis on corporate futurism rn; the keynote, separately, is on hype...)

Been thinking recently about a ‘turn to badness’ re the explicitness of immoral behaviour usually more ‘hidden’ in the cult(ure) of tech startups etc (think: VCs proudly & openly promoting defence investments) - looking for good readings on cynicism / explicit badness - anyone?

Ok, time to dust off some Hannah Arendt, for absolutely no particular reason: "In totalitarian regimes, provocation, once only the speciality of the secret agent, becomes a method of dealing with his neighbor which everybody, willingly or unwillingly is forced to follow" (OT, ed. 2004, p. 556) 1/
