I feel like it was a happy medium for science and non science readers in level of detail. The straightforward, accessible writing style really works for it. I adored reading him figure things out, especially calculating gravity at the beginning which is a problem I run when I tutor physics.

I have so many feelings about this story. I'm a leaky human about it. Good good good story. I already had so many feelings about the Artemis II mission and it's all mixing together. Love for STEM renewed. Energy to read renewed. Hope renewed. Ultimately people are pretty good.

From a craft perspective: bouncing back and forth between the past and present stories to keep suspense building. The mix of whimsy and dread that grows with each page turn. The handling of Grace's character arc and fulfillment. He was still a teacher at the end doing what he loved!

Gender lens: Stratt's ruthlessness and moral grayness to a degree that's rare to see in a female character. The ends justify the means. Nothing is too dramatic when the alternative is extinction. Someone needs to make tough calls without hesitation. Stratt juxtaposed with Grace being all emotion.

The parallels between the Eridian and human spirit. Pushing the boundaries of science no matter the risk or gaps in our knowledge. If we'd never tested a spacecraft before we would still have done the exact same thing. The planetary stakes: the best sci-fi is also horror.

"Write the world you want to see" with the whole world, East and West, collaborating on a project to save it. All energy and funding going to science instead of war. The ambiguous yet hopeful ending: however bad it is, society held together enough to launch a mission to Venus.

As an aro person, it's rare to find a story about platonic love so when I come across one it's not hard for me to fall in love with it. And it's not hard to read Grace as aroace. The awkwardness and discomfort any time someone brings up sex or assumes he and Stratt are sleeping together.

He went back for his friend! He felt bad about remembering his reluctance to go on the mission and then found fulfillment through going back for his friend. Crying about Rocky counter at 6 and counting.

Binge read Project Hail Mary over 48 hours. Easily on my list of favorite books. "What it means to be a person" answered with "illogical and self-sacrificing choices made to help your friend at the risk of entire worlds that ultimately save entire worlds."

Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage.
A woman answers the door.
We have come for the child, says the hooded figure
So soon? she asks
It is time, says the hooded figure.
The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card!
What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure
We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading!
For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness
Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman,
the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them.
Do not cry mother.
I am a writer now.

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

Oh, your plucky heroine disguised as a boy to hide her identity? Yeah, you left him unattended for 15 minutes and I told him about testosterone. Where is he now? Damn I dunno he took off like a pack of wolves was chasing him, you might have to find a new plot now.

I love queerplatonic relationships. Put them in everything I write. What if we'd go to the ends of the earth for each other & our bond transcended the limits of language & we resisted any attempt to define us while saving each other again & again. Do NOT separate

two book covers and black text on a blue-white background. Over each book cover is their title: Friend of the Damned and Lock the Last Door. In between the covers are the words: trans masc detective MCs in historic inspired horror. Over the cover of Friend of the Damned is the genre: gaslamp gothic horror. To the left of the cover are the tropes: 1890s inspired, ghosts and mediums, women's wrongs, and letter to the villain. Beneath the cover are the content warnings: mild transphobia, violence, death, alcohol use. Over the cover for Lock the Last Door is the genre: Cthulhu Mythos Noir. To the right are the tropes: flapper era, crime lord rival, creepy old house, and scary bubbles. Beneath the cover is the content warnings: minor transphobia, violence, death, body horror

Whenever I finish an outline, I'm always left with a couple plot points I'm not sure where to place. Only by writing the thing can I test out what the best flow and order of events will be. When you have lots of moving parts, you need to actually move them to figure it out!

Poem entitled "Gray Fog" by Sara Teasdale

A fog drifts in, the heavy laden
Cold white ghost of the sea--
One by one the hills go out,
The road and the pepper-tree.

I watch the fog float in at the window
With the whole world gone blind,
Everything, even my longing, drowses,
Even the thoughts in my mind.

I put my head on my hands before me,
There is nothing left to be done or said,
There is nothing to hope for, I am tired,
And heavy as the dead.

A group of six nature valentines. A picture of a bog with pitcher plants, with text saying "Our love is like a bog. Built up over time, resistant to decay, deeply interesting to just a small number of people." A yellow slime mold stretching out and exploring. "Our love is like a slime mold. Collaborative, complex, at times unnerving to behold." A piece of limestone with a small trilobite in the corner. "Our love is like limestone. Layered, useful for many purposes, shaped by the friends we met along the way." A ring-billed gull with a french fry on a beach. "Our love is like a ring-billed gull. Abundant, found in North America, sometimes sustained by french fries." An Atlantic horseshoe crab walking on the sand. "Our love is like a horseshoe crab. Tough, timeless, unrelated to true crabs." A drawing of the phosphorus cycle, with arrows connecting various parts of a scene, including algae and fish and a farm and a river and a forest. "Our love is like the phosphorus cycle. Important, really hard to draw."

They are counting on you giving up.

Doesn't mean you can't be afraid, angry, or both, but spreading hopelessness is spreading inaction in the face if fascism narratives and that's euthanasia for resistance.
