DEC, OPRHP, and New York State Hemlock Initiative Announce Major Milestone in Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Biological Control β€œHemlocks are a foundation species in New York’s forests, providing critical habitat for wildlife, supporting water quality, and stabilizing soil on steep slopes,” said Justin Perry, DEC’s Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health Bureau Chief. β€œTheir conservation is a priority for New York State, and successful biological control efforts like this collection strengthen ongoing, science-based work to manage HWA through integrated pest management strategies.”

A predator beetle (Laricobius nigrinus) being released to control the invasive #HemlockWoollyAdelgid, is reproducing successfully in New York. Thousands were collected and redistributed to support long-term forest health.

Why invasive spotted lanternflies are thriving in the US Researchers are getting a better understanding of why spotted lanternflies have been thriving since their invasion into the U.S.

Despite low genetic diversity from a single introduction, the #SpottedLanternfly is thriving in the U.S. Researchers say its preadaptation to city habitats and high reproductive output has helped fuel its rapid spread.
