A very thin, wet, and dark brown twig enters the frame from the top right corner and ends in the center of the frame. At the end of the twig, a strange blob or orange, fluid-like stuff clings on, looking like tangled orange intestines. A tiny bubble of air is trapped at the center of the tangled mass. This weird orange stuff is a slime mold - an organism that crawls around in search of food, changing its shape as it matures from a liquidy mass to a hard, often tree-like spore dispersing form.

Not a mushroom, but a slime mold! This very peculiar thing appears to be part of a slime mold that crawled onto the end of this stick and had nowhere to go

When scientists put slime mold over a map of Tokyo, they used food to represent urban areas. After a day the mold created a network nearly identical to Tokyo's rail network: all this without any brain.

I noticed this patch of Heterotrichia ferruginea on 12 November. It looked as in photo 1. A few days later it looked as in photo 2. It is still there and looks as in photos 3 and 4. The capillitia are delicate and fluffy, but even the harsh winter didn't destroy them.

The chocolate tube slime mold are better in focus in this shot in the top right quadrant. Another group of the bright yellow slime mold is also visible peeking through the cracked wood in the top left quadrant. There are a few sporadic couples and small groupings of that appear to be 2 different species of slime mold in the bottom left quadrant. Note the tiny white fungi just to the right of the massive yellow grouping of slime mold. Of course there is also the gilled bonnet fungi in the center left. And tons of disco fungi on the lower half of the wood. I'm probably missing a few things but there is just too much to describe. A composite of 28 pictures were used to create this singular focus stacked image.

In addition to the static fungi there is also a tiny beetle present on the large mass of slime mold. An any is also present in the center of the shot hanging from the ceiling of the crack that might be difficult to spot in the darkness. Another insect is in the center right on the lower portion of the cut wood. As in the first shot there are near countless Linopodes white mites with crazy arms seem throughout the crack and even on the bonnet fungi. A composite of 25 manually focused sequential pictures were used in the creation of this focus stacked image.

At least 4 unique species of #Fungi, 3 species of #SlimeMold and 4 species of #Insects can be spotted in these shots in addition to the moss. #FungiFriends #Macro #Photography

Barry Webb Documents a Marvelous, Macro Array of Colorful Slime Molds Thanks to Webb's up-close, high-resolution shots, we glimpse a phenomenally beautiful world that is otherwise virtually invisible.

We love a slime mold around here. “From mottled gray bulbs that look like snow-covered trees to pink, coral-like tendrils, Webb chronicles a huge array of colors and shapes.” [thisiscolossal.com]

I don't know how big Giant Velvet Worms actually are, but this one looks pretty solid. It has a white body (well, off-white to pale pink).

A brown velvet worm covered in tiny papillae, each of a different colour. There is an indentation on the top of the head between the base of the two antennae and I suspect its to do with the generic name of Phallocephale. I'm guessing this is one of the species that has an eversible intromittent organ on its noggin. But I don't know and am unwilling to investigate further.

Saving the best for last: Velvet Worms or Onychophora. Unlike other nominees, this is a whole phylum. When a whole phylum is underrated, you know where your vote should go. (9/12)
