Two-panel image. Left: an 18th-century oil portrait of Margaret Cavendish in an extravagant red-and-white gown with gold embroidery, lace sleeves, and fur trim, standing gracefully beside a table with a red cloth. Right: the reprint 1668 title page of her book The Description of a New World, Called The Blazing-World, printed in ornate period type, proclaiming it “Written By the Thrice Noble, Illustrious, and Excellent Princesse, the Duchess of Newcastle.” Together they represent the bold, eccentric 17th-century aristocrat who published the world’s first science-fiction novel under her own name.
The first-ever #sciencefiction story written by a woman?

Close up on the right side of a woman's face. There is a frilled collar and delicate lace headpiece.
Detail of the right arm with a lace sleeve and a gold bracelet. She is holding a handkerchief in her hand.
These details? Stunning!

Also, as a tangent, I'd love to see more of this kind of thing on #academicsky. More sharing of tools, ideas, and resources for teaching, not just endless doom amd gloom.
We should share our hard-won knowledge about pedagogy as eagerly and as often as we share our research!
Some brilliant ideas about reading here!
