In Frontier Force using different weapons is an important mechanic to learn but is only documented in the manual. Some people found it difficult for this reason.
In Razing Core I'll attempt to explain everything in-game to make things easier.

Taking a rest from stage building to work on some small cosmetic improvements. Added some fast background stars to the entry and to some boss fights. #mastersystem #homebrew
On Feature Creep Friday I added a new secondary laser weapon. It seems to be equally overpowered and annoying to use in most situations, which seems like a good combination. #mastersystem #homebrew
Stage 5 progress has been fast despite the challenges. It has the most variety in one stage with various switching of the palette and tiles.
It made me wonder how big a continuous stage could be with the right planning. Perhaps for the next game.

A fun fact when making this, I designed the ship model in Blockbench but the exported wire frame version (left) was too busy at low-resolution for the SMS.
As a quick solution I textured the model with simple wire frames and exported that textured model instead. It's so silly but it worked.
I guess it all depends on the screen and sprite sizes.
The best thing I added to keep things busy was an optional event to spawn more enemies if the player cleared the previous quickly. It works as a kind of difficulty ramp but also allows a good player to score more.
I treat them separately with a limit on each as it's easier to manage and seems more flexible.
I guess you could optimise a single pool/loop to be faster but looping over a few different pools is rarely a bottleneck anyway.
A wowan in red dress, in a transparent bubble on the hull of a gigantic spaceship.
A big and a small yellow robots holfing each other's hand in a rusty junkyard.
An astronaut in an heavily armored red spacesuit, in the distance there is a strange gigantic device.
A mech, a tank and a jet plane in the derelicts of a modern city.

Yea that's what I meant, the Aleste brand should've been used for GG/SMS outside Japan from the beginning, but hindsight is 20/20.
The terrible review aside, it's a shame the Aleste name wasn't attached, I think that could've helped to pull over the shmup base earlier. The confusion with GG Aleste II probably didn't help either. It seems like it's just seen as one of those one-off games, but of course it is an Aleste game.
Hello #PortfolioDay !
I make SEGA Master System games.
One of the SMS Power competition coding entries is a nice speech synthesis program. I tested it here (the whole Radiohead song would be funny).
Keep making those decisions!
Mock-up Sega Mark III box cover for the (homebrew) game Road Fighter.
Remember this one back in the day?
It's funny because I had some hellscape like Darius in mind for the stage before I started the game, but I never mentioned that and left it completely open to you.
So when I heard the music (still my favourite btw) a bittersweet return home made more sense and was more interesting.
You're actually not far off 🤝
After looking at asteroids and craters for several months I can finally draw something nicer. 🏖️ #mastersystem #homebrew
I often suggest the below to get started on the SMS. They're fun and hold up today.
Golden Axe Warrior
Power Strike II
Sonic 1
Wonder Boy III
After those you can't go wrong on the previous list either.
Our remake of Road Fighter for SEGA Master System/Mark III is now available to play. Download for free below.

Here's a side by side comparison of the original arcade and our version of Road Fighter for the SEGA Master System!
I've certainly tried to do this, and @lovelovepenguin.bsky.social has gone beyond my expectations several times for the Razing Core soundtrack.
So much so that I play that particular BGM on a loop while I make the stage.
Well that's a different question to game play tightness, but since I'm a graphics guy these are some of my favourites:
Aladdin
Asterix games
Darius II
Donald Duck games
Kenseiden
Master of Darkness
Mickey Mouse games
Masters of Combat
Power Strike II
Wonder Boy III
Flight of Pigarus (homebrew)
Designing a shmup (or any action game) for a 40 year old console really focuses the mind.
If you only have 10-20 objects (often less) to challenge the player with you have to make them all count.
Restrictions are a great way to learn to design tight and interesting game play.

Another 80s Konami arcade classic that never made its way to a Sega console, gets a conversion courtesy of @badcomputer0 and @chirinea for the 2026 SMS Power Competition.
How does it measure up to the Arcade and NES versions?

Nothing special tonight...
Been feeling pretty tired and sick today so treated to myself to some new Arcade shmups.
Going to have a chill Friday night in playing them until I feel like it's bedtime.
Figured I may as well stream them
Feel free to come chill and hang.
