Smart monitoring helps tram network cut water use by 70% Yarra Trams cut water use at its New Preston Depot by almost 70%, saving 6.6 million litres of water a year, enough to fill 20 E-class trams after joining the WaterSmart program. The savings come after Yarra Valley Water installed data loggers at the depot as part of the Victorian Government’s program. The depot services Melbourne’s E-class trams and includes automated wash facilities. The smart loggers detected unusually high water use between 4 and 5 am, which was traced to the tram wash backflush, the system that keeps the wash clean. By reducing the backflush cycle to 15 minutes, Yarra Trams is saving 18,200 litres per day without affecting cleaning standards. “The data logger at New Preston helped us reduce water used by our tram wash by almost 70% — helping us deliver on our commitment to sustainability and reduce our environmental impact,” said Yarra Trams’ Environment Manager Renée Karlson. Pollution endangers rivers flowing thru Narsingdi Unchecked industrial pollution has endangered the rivers flowing through Narsingdi district, while leaving the riverbank communities and ecosystems vulnerable. Narsingdi is crisscrossed by a number of rivers, including the Shitalakkhya, Meghna, Brahmaputra, Arial Kha, Haridhoya, Paharia, Haridhoa and the Old Brahmaputra rivers. Over the past decades, industrial establishments that have expanded rapidly along the riverbanks continued to discharge untreated toxic wastes directly into the rivers using pipelines, thereby polluting the water and leading to an escalating environmental crisis. Illegal encroachment on riverbank areas and declining navigability of the rivers further worsened the situation. For much of the year, even small boats find it difficult to ply many stretches of the rivers due to poor navigability. Despite a government initiative to re-excavate around 232 kilometres of river channels to restore navigability, pollution remains a persistent challenge for its implementation. Even during monsoon, when water levels typically rise, dissolved oxygen levels in the rivers still remain critically low, making it impossible for fish and other aquatic species to survive. That’s where we go to find them, Allen Niptanatiak, chairman of the Kugluktuk Hunters and Trappers Organization, tells Mongabay in a video call. The Inuit harvesters focus on culling the younger cows and bulls, leaving the breeding animals alone. It takes a couple hours to skin, butcher and load up the sleds, the older and younger generations working together in -30° Celsius to -35°C (-22° Fahrenheit to -35°F), weather that is “just perfect,” says Niptanatiak, an Inuk hunter and trapper from Nunavut, who is also a retired conservation officer. “Then we eat and have a big meal and just enjoy it and talk and say, ‘Oh, this is a blessing,’” he says. Michigan health officials urge measles vaccination as 8th case is reported LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - A new case of measles has been reported in Monroe County, marking the eighth case in Michigan this year. Seven other cases have been identified in Washtenaw County. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is urging families to get vaccinated. Health officials recommend an accelerated first dose of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine for infants ages 6 to 11 months in several counties, including Jackson, Livingston and Lenawee. The early-dose recommendation runs through May 16. Infants who receive the early dose will still need two additional doses after their first birthday to complete the series.
