The most Canadian story I've seen in a while. It involves a scruffy dude, a kind stranger and wildlife. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

New at #EnvironmentalEvidence! @ryanhodgson.bsky.social @joebennett.bsky.social @timalamenciak.bsky.social et al. evaluated the use of OntGPT and ontologies (machine-interpretable glossaries of domain terminology) in data extraction. #EvidenceSynthesis #AI 🧪 🤖
Trying to listen to that queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach telling me "you're overcommitted", even if the opportunity seems cool. I feel like I'm still learning.

french artist hubert duprant makes artists out of insects. caddisfly (trichoptera sp.) larvae are provided gold flecks and precious stones like turquoise, emeralds, and pearls, which they bind together into a cocoon with silk spun from modified salivary glands.

This is a good time to remember that Moas, Emus, and the other ratites diverged so long ago, they FLEW to different continents, and then lost the ability to fly and became giants independently. You can't just sprinkle a few variants to make one into the other.

Just in time for the long weekend: Ontario announces intent to repeal Endangered Species Act and replace it with new Species Conservation Act: ero.ontario.ca/notice/025-0...
Ugh. I haven't looked yet but can't be good.
Bad media science takes can kill off whole species.
Gene edited puppies are NOT actually dire wolves, any more than an especially hair mouse is a mammoth.
Endangered Species Act is NOT rendered moot by this publicity stunt

Anyone else getting followed by a bunch of progressive bots? Someone or rather something has obviously figured out my politics. Typical format is some vague feel-good aphorism, then the odd picture to suggest realism, then lots of reposts of progressive content.
Just got one today in fact
Prioritizing conservation action using participatory science data could result in better biodiversity outcomes than paying for targeted professional monitoring - allowing managers to redistribute limited conservation resources from monitoring to action 🌏 🧪

New work by @adbinley.bsky.social and others: 61% of endangered species in Canada lack research on what conservation actions work. We need more action-based research. conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Citizen science (aka community science or participatory science) can help conservation agencies save money that can then be used directly for conservation. @adbinley.bsky.social shows this in her latest paper: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
A bunch of us looked at detectability in conservation, and the profound effect that imperfect detection is having on decisions. We outlined several ways of dealing with this problem. esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
