For the first time in 10 years, since Angel Hsu, PhD, founded our lab in 2016, we are introducing a new brand identity! Designed by Louis Charron, DDL’s refreshed identity expresses the centering of people in our work, transforming messy, complex datasets into clear, actionable insights.

We kept the existing icon but refreshed the wordmark. Thanks to @profangelhsu.bsky.social, the @datadrivenlab.bsky.social team, and @fromthelabbench.bsky.social for brand strategy help.

We used collage to layer abstract and concrete elements—showing that behind every data point are people and places. The geometric shapes are abstracted from cities the lab studies while the palette and fonts balance trustworthiness with energy.

New work! Branding and website for Data Driven EnviroLab, a research lab at UNC Chapel Hill turning complex environmental data into actionable policy.
The visual identity centers on turning messy datasets into clear insights, but with humanity at its core.
Super proud to support organizations protecting knowledge that belongs to all of us. Read the full story about PEDP's new identity here: screening-tools.com/blog/blog-po...

The brand draws from traditional archival aesthetics: paper-inspired colors, layouts that recreate an archivist's desk, and a monogram that serves as an authenticity seal. Every visual element reinforces that these aren't just digital files, but essential knowledge we all rely on.
I had the pleasure of working with the Public Environmental Data Partners to create a visual identity that transforms abstract digital preservation into something tangible and trustworthy.
New branding work! Since January 2025, critical environmental datasets are being systematically removed from federal websites, information we all need to understand climate risks and protect public health.
I was thrilled to support their vision by designing a small visual identity that captures the lagoon's ecological essence, helping this crucial conversation on nature's rights reach new audiences. #BiennaleArchitettura2025
For the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025, Katja Schechtner and Alex Putzer affiliated with IDRA and Università Ca' Foscari Venezia are challenging us to reconsider the rights of the Venice lagoon through a thoughtful Manifesto. #rightsofnature
I wrote a piece exploring these ideas in depth. Check it out here: medium.com/user-experie...

For years I've used visual metaphors without truly understanding how they work. After months of exploration, I think I've gained a better sense of what makes a good metaphor and why they're crucial for communicating complex ideas. #scicomm
Flyer for the 2025 Visual SciComm Seminar speaker Louis Charron. A Water Whys logo is at the top left with a question mark embedded in an upside down water droplet. At the center is a picture Louis. The background in the lower half is reminiscent of waves. The event is Friday, February 14, 2025, 1pm ET. The talk is "How to Make Science Captivating". The description reads, "Drawing from how people engage with scientific content, freelance graphic designer Louis Charron will examine three powerful tools – storytelling, metaphors, and beauty – that transform scientific communication. By understanding how stories create meaning, how metaphors shape understanding, and how beauty drives both curiosity and cultural relevance, we can develop more effective approaches to sharing complex ideas." At the bottom, it notes, "this is the first speaker of a four-part virtual series held via Zoom. Please register for each Seminar individually to receive your Zoom link. Link in Description!"
You're scrolling through your feed when suddenly you stop, your eyes drawn to something fascinating!
You've got until noon ET TODAY (Feb 14) to register for the first Water Whys UA Visual SciComm Seminar speaker, freelance graphic designer @louischarron.bsky.social.

Can't wait to learn about this today for the @waterwhysua.bsky.social Visual SciComm Seminar! It's not too late for folks to register for this free virtual talk! waterwhys.org/seminar/spri...
I explored how storytelling, metaphors, and beauty transform complex science into compelling stories, blending theory with techniques developed over years of practice.
If your institution would benefit from this perspective on science communication, let's connect!
Yesterday marked an exciting milestone: my first public lecture sharing insights from nearly a decade of design for science communication! At Quantum Creators Con at the City College of New York, I presented "How to Make Science Captivating"

This marks our first venture into science communication for the humanities, and I'm grateful to @slingerland.bsky.social for trusting us with telling this story!
We’re proud to share our latest video about the Database of Religious History, a scientific initiative that maps how religions have evolved across millennia. I wrote and produced the piece, with @narrative612.bsky.social bringing it to life through stunning animation.

How do you tell the story of a database?
First, reveal why this data matters for both scientists and the public, and second, bring it to life through beautiful animation!

Looking to collaborate with more research teams! If your lab needs a fresh visual identity that communicates your work clearly and beautifully, let's connect!
The refined palette and typography blend academic heritage with technological innovation symbolizing the work of the Lab. Check out the website here: livablecitylab.yale.edu
We created a dynamic logo featuring an expanding town square, brought to life through vibrant gradients. The identity incorporates abstract shapes drawn from actual city blocks studied at the Lab, creating a bridge between research and design.
Thrilled to share one of my favorite projects from 2024: the new visual identity and website for Yale Livable City Lab!

👀 Excited to share my very first interview about my work as a designer in science communication! I had a great conversation with @fromthelabbench.bsky.social we talked about the role of beauty, the importance of naivety and the power of metaphors. ↓
So impressed with the results! Louis and the team really dug into the research and came up with a clear and insightful video translation 🔬
Working hand-in-hand with scientists Arjen Stolk & Saskia B. J. Koch from script to storyboard, this research came to life through Janès Zabukovec's animation magic ✨

🌱 New work: how to brand environmental justice in tech?
I had so much fun working with the team at Rooted Futures Lab on creating their new visual identity combining AI schematics with vintage botanical imagery, blending tech aesthetics with grainy organic textures
