Climate change & digitalization - what are the connections? Most often, digitalization is seen as the solution for problems caused by industrial age. But both are more entangled than you might think. History of computing in the Anthropocene www.uni-paderborn.de/en/lehre/leh... #digitalgeschichte

„Digitalisierung ist Gegenstand gesellschaftlicher, politischer und akademischer Reflexionen. Oft erfolgen diese aus der Perspektive der technologisch hochentwickelten Zentren. Wir wollen die globalen Entwicklungen der Digitalisierung aus der Perspektive des Globalen Südens in den Blick nehmen“

Hat sich daraus eigentlich etwas ergeben?
Antwort: Das Speichersymbol. 😄
New essay I just published (Jan. 2024). On cypherpunk/Bitcoin religion/cult, fraud/scams, recent developments & hype (ETFs & halving) & placing in longer historical contexts--channeling my best Carl Becker. #BTC #ETH #BlackRockETF #halving #ai #history

What a story! And what a pity with the pdf issues. But aren’t the SPIEGEL issues digital available through university libraries?
WarGames would definitely be a good catch for that. The year before big brother…
Books on one specific year were a thing lately: 1979, by Frank Bösch, 1977 by Philipp Sarasin, Karl Schlögel’s Moscow 1937. Eventually, we have one for the history of computing: William Aspray’s 1920 focusing on the history of information in one particular year in the US #digitalgeschichte
Tune in to C-SPAN today at 4:35 PM ET for the AHA’s Congressional Briefing on historical perspectives on AI. Moderator Matthew L. Jones & Janet Abbate, Matthew Connelly, & @justcodeculture.bsky.social placed the current conversations on AI into historical context. www.c-span.org/video/?53128...
All the best for you and have a great time there. The desire for coffee is always strong. ;)
Gerne!
#digitalgeschichte #historyofcomputing
The Web and the historian: in my seminar introduction to digital history at Paderborn University, I’m discussing the possibilities of the web both as source & as medium for science comm. We’re reading texts by Mareike König on blogging and by Nils Brügger on Web Source critique #teachingDH
Today we celebrate the completion of our IGGI project on the history of #AI in West Germany. Great keynote by Stephanie Dick! Now Helen Piel and Rudi Seising present approaches, methods and results in the hallowed halls of the Deutsches Museum! #histtech #AIhistory
And now the team entered the stage: impressive results of 4 years of research on history of AI! Some early findings & an insight into how to do research on that. All the best for the books! @dinp.bsky.social, Helen Piel, Rudi Seising, Jakob Tschandl & Florian Müller #Digitalgeschichte
„Castles in the Sky”: Reflections on the Mechanical Inexhaustibility of Mathematics, Keynote by @mysdick.bsky.social So impressive! MACSYMA as an early expert system in automated mathematics. She made a convincing argument basing on Mahoney's how the world got into computer: Math was transformed!
Now starting: The final conference of the wonderful project on the "History of AI in Germany" (IGGI: Ingenieure des Geistes – Geistesingenieure) at the Deutsches Museum, Munich. Looking back to four years of research on #historyofcomputing #Digitalgeschichte @dinp.bsky.social #historyoftechnology
50 years since Brian Randell’s “the origins of digital computers”. A seminal work of the #historyofcomputing and technology. Not only the history of digitalization is already going on since a while but also its historiography. #digitalgeschichte blog.hnf.de/die-urspruen...

BEHIND THE FACADE
OF POTSDAM
Our international group was invited today by Rechenzentrum Potsdam and ZZF Potsdam on a historic tour organised by me. The highlight was a view from the roof of the old data center - today a vibrant place of art and culture. www.instagram.com/p/Cz6gd58M6W... #digineq
Tim Schinschick asking for the regional history of computing in education in Baden-Württemberg: was it a front runner, or just as the others? How did computer education change? Schinschick citing @maltethiessen.bsky.social and his programmatic article on a regional history of computing. #digineq
DIGITAL INEQUALITIES - historicising the changes in the digital age. Do we need #DH for writing about #historyofcomputing? I would say definitively yes! Today starts the workshop of the ZZF project #digineq Looking forward to interesting talks about schools, women and migration/borders in Germany
Selfie below the face wearing a blue tshirt with a classic Mac that has molten cheese all over with a pizza slice coming out of the floppy drive. The Mac’s screen says “Mac & Cheese.” in a script font.
