Showed the pictures of them working, most said they hadn’t noticed me taking pictures. One group said they had. We talked about what was the difference. They ALL (even the group that saw) said the ones who didn’t notice were “locked in” and focused on the task. Great discussion on effective groups

Students working together engaged in task
Words to describe team
Used the 100 Number Task from @saravanderwerf.bsky.social to reinforce group work. Went great! All kids were engaged and trying. Talked about what it looks like to work together (communication was #1!). Found percent change in scores and still had all in. #iTeachMath #MTBoS #EduSky
I love this! Definitely want to spend some time with my students playing with the numbers when we come back from break :-)
This! I can still recite the preamble from having had to recite it from memory in school several years ago (more than I care to admit!)
Growing up, we memorized everything: phones & addresses etc. I was constantly using that part of my brain. Students today seem to have a hard time retaining info from day to day, and I think it’s because they never taught their brains to remember. What do we do about it? #MTBoS #ITeachMath #EduSky
Congratulations fireworks
Achieved my National Board Certification in Mathematics. It was a lot of work but worth it! I’m thankful to reach this milestone. #EduSky #MTBoS #iTeachMath #IAmAnNBCT #NBCTStrong @NBPTS
I think that’s what I’m going to do as well. Hopefully the context helps bring it in from abstract rules to apply.
I’ve been looking for something fun for my classes that have been working with binary. Love that this brings up other discussions as well. Bringing in art, tessellation, probability, so much we can talk about while still having fun! #MTBoS #EduSku
That’s how I usually hand it, but it doesn’t seem to be working.
The day before Thanksgiving break, I gave a quiz over derivative rules that we’d been working on for weeks. Most students earned 50% or less. We are back in session on Monday and I need to address this, but clearly not in the same way as normal. Looking for new ideas. #MTBoS #ITeachMath #EduSky
Quadratic Formula has been a struggle. Today did error analysis on student work. Had to find the mistake, say why it happened, fix it, and solve correctly. Gave 4 min w/ groups, then reviewed full class. After the 6th round, kid yelled “omg I get it!” Will def be doing more of these! #MTBoS #EduSky
Thank you. I need to get better at using AI to reword thing. This is great!
Sharing relevance with students to inspire motivation to learn. Question for the void: how to you inspire unmotivated students when the relevance is about doing future learning and not their daily life? Just hope they find what they’ll learn next year relevant today? #MTBoS #ITeachMath #EduSky
Americans will measure by anything but the metric system… lol Thinking of showing this to my students for our math discussions. What do you notice & wonder?
Desmos activity 🤦♀️
I want to thank everyone for their ideas. Today we started with a Desmond discovery activity, then did some quick partner movements before solidifying the lesson with notes. There was so much more engagement!
Thanks for this! I’ve done this in pre years with some success and haven’t tried it yet this year.
I actually did, and got a mix of needing more class time to work and more days on each concept. They also said they talk too much and are distracted. We made a deal that if they’d be more focused I’d give more time. We’ll see. Trying to balance that need with successful kids needing to go faster.
I try to do some, but the room is fairly full. I am climbing over bags and kids as I circulate the room.
Teaching a low level 10th grade math course and attention, participation, and scores are at an all time low for me. Need ideas for reengagement. I’ve tried whiteboards, games, card sorts, projects, and foldables in our notes. What’s something that is working for you? #MTBoS #ITeachMath #EduSky
It seems we are all just trying to learn how to support everyone else while many of us just barely getting through ourselves. It sucks and I haven’t thought of any way to fix the systemic issues.
I’m pretty sure I don’t look at 90% of my emails before deleting them!
Had a student tell me my room was the only place they felt safe. I responded “oh how sweet! I love that you feel comfortable here!” But 10 seconds later I realized that it also meant they didn’t feel safe anywhere else. I’m so saddened by this and at a loss for what to do. #edusky #iteachmath
Omg so true! I was at school for 9 hours today. As I was leaving I realized I hadn’t left my room since I got there and I really had to pee!
Still in the classroom! 16 years at high school math
I love this approach!
Hi! Southern California here!
This is my accelerated 7th and they were finding the mean absolute deviation of a set of prices.
So true!!!!
