It's more of a question as to where are anemones NOT found? From the underside of ice in Antarctica and deep sea thermal vents to being fully exposed intertidal and buried in low salinity estuaries. Anemones are everywhere they want to be!

The key thing is, we all come with some idea of what the job market looks like & what PUI expectations are. Coming from an R1 it may seem like there's no future at the moment, but I pursued this alternative path 8 years ago & am enjoying my position/institution. I'm happy to help w/questions. (5/5)

Yes, it's a lot of teaching, but at a small PUI engaged teaching is different than your typical lecture style. Students do impactful projects, things that are publishable. We emphasize hands on training and have the infrastructure and class size to do it. Happy to answer any ?'s anyone has (4/5).

Since starting here in 2018 I have been able to grow the largest research group on campus, have been competitive for (small) grants, and enjoy working with my co-workers. I get to take students to exciting international destinations as part of their coursework, conferences, & out in the field. (3/5)

Back in 2018 (1st term) I found an institution that supported undergrad research & built research funding in the annual budget. I knew was taking a risk, but many PUIs do this.

I was afraid the 1st term would look like what we see now. Thankfully it didn't, but unfortunately it's happening (2/5)

If you know a postdoc or graduate student that's had their future trajectory cut due to federal BS and they're looking for alternative paths point them towards a PUI with undergrad research.

We do some great things with students and it can be very rewarding.(An ITYSL gif thread 1 of 5)

My NSF PRFB on the genetics of female polymorphism in hummingbirds was terminated yesterday.

I don't have much to say, I'm just sad. We've discovered so much, and could have gone so much further.

If anyone else is in the same boat, esp postdocs, please reach out, it would be good to connect.

Now that I've had tenure for a year I'm not sure if I'm complaining about things more because I have tenure or that things have gotten annoyingly worse? (Not worse as in bad here, but AI, student/faculty apathy, admin grumbles etc.).

Evaluating Student Evaluations of Teaching: a Review of Measurement and Equity Bias in SETs and Recommendations for Ethical Reform - Journal of Academic Ethics Student evaluations of teaching are ubiquitous in the academe as a metric for assessing teaching and frequently used in critical personnel decisions. Yet, there is ample evidence documenting both meas...

If you use standardised feedback for student evaluation of teaching, it disadvantages women, the global majority, and other marginalised groups. Even if you add an "unconscious bias" statement.

I made this the other night while procrastinating, mainly because I thought all the posts about the blackout were boring. It feels like there is momentum bringing people together!

I sit on a committee for the Excellence in ScComm awards. This afternoon, I wrote to my fellow members that unless & until @nationalacademies.org “actively combat political censorship instead of capitulating to illegal, racist demands, I will not participate in any further service on their behalf.“

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

Thank you for your continued guidance and communication through my grant submission process. Your assistance meant so much, I truly couldn't have figured it out without you. Who knows where it will go from here, or even if it will be reviewed, but I couldn't have done it without you. THANK YOU!
