Almost two years ago now, we wrote about a man with mental illness who was restrained in a chair for 3 days in an Illinois county jail. Now, he has received a settlement in his civil rights case. @illinoisanswers.bsky.social illinoisanswers.org/2026/04/07/t...
We are officially entering the “oh is it going to be as warm as yesterday-oh it’s going to be worse today” part of the year. Happy day to all who celebrate 😂 (me, it’s me, I love the heat!)
Basically, yeah. There are monsters and awful people in the files. But a ton of regular people also got swept up in it, and as always — details matter.

just give me all the data you have.
wait, wait … i worry what you just heard was, 'give me a lot of data.'
what I said was, give me all the data you have. do you understand?
And I’ve never gotten better returns on records, anywhere, anytime, than if I just call every single day or show up in person (always remain professional and polite, of course, but those two things have taken me far!)
Well. Probably part of the reason I have such a good return rate so far this year is I'm now FOIA’ing in Illinois 9 times out of 10, and the law/records culture over there is far, far superior to the Sunshine (ahem) State’s.
Almost through the first quarter of this year, and I have received records 86% of the time I've FOIA'd for them. I'll take it!
