In Halifax free transit for kids led to 52.4% reporting using transit as one of their primary ways to get to school, & 75.8% using transit for non-school related travel at least once per week.

Over 85% said the transit pass made them feel more independent.

The PC government is cutting it anyways.

Opinion: Jobs argument no longer a ‘get out of jail free’ card in Nova Scotia Environmental, health and community impacts have often been presented as the price of employment, writes Lindsay Lee.

“Despite what we’ve always been told, it’s not really about jobs. It’s not really about the economy. It’s not really about the deficit
It’s about values. And it always has been.
It’s more evident than ever what this government is “defending,” and it’s not our way of life, our land or even our jobs.”

HRM Against Austerity | Stop The Cuts! Tell Halifax Regional Council to stop disastrous cuts. Invest in transit, culture, and our future.

I’m really impressed with all the HaliSky folks who’ve come together to advocate for fiscal sustainability in Halifax.
Unlike the astroturf landlord group with their clickbait facebook survey, we now have a website with facts & tools for folks to contact council. Send those emails!

Car culture helped bring about Nova Scotia's projected $1.4-billion deficit and congestion crisis. The province's response is to dump more money into highway widening while transit stares down service cuts (despite high ridership) and the loss of bus lanes (to car congestion).

Halifax councillors considering carpool lanes to help ease traffic congestion - Halifax | Globalnews.ca The mayor said he believes moving ahead with high-occupancy (HOV) lanes could help the municipality take control of its own roadways and planning.

Andy Fillmore wants to take away dedicated bus lanes by opening them up to “high occupancy vehicles” (HOV).

The bike network is expensive because we didn’t do it ten years ago like we were promised. Stop dicking around and build it!!!

As many cities get smarter at evidence-based city-building, positioning themselves for greater success in every way we can count, and many ways we can’t, some cities seem obsessed with self-sabotage. Case-in-point: city “leaders” arguing for the removal of safe bike infrastructure. #OwnGoal

Activate climate’s ‘silent majority’ to supercharge action, experts say Making concerned people aware their views are far from alone could unlock the change so urgently needed

A huge 89% majority of global people [56% even in the United States] want stronger action to fight the #ClimateCrisis, but mistakenly believe they’re in a minority.

The “silent majority” for #ClimateAction needs to get loud.

People want action. Smart cities need to go much further, much faster.

Opinion: Why more urban cycling saves everyone money | Urbanized The resulting benefits of a ‘car-less’ household are myriad, but few are as quantifiable as the money most people sink into a depreciating asset that sits unused for 95% of the time.

“If you care about the bottom line, budgets & taxes, then you should care about urban biking, because it’s a money saver. It’s ironic when so-called fiscal conservatives attack biking, when their efforts just show a lack of understanding of math.” My interview with @modacitylife.com #CityMakingMath
