A main point of paying taxes, following laws & rules, & doing our part in civic duties formally & informally is to support all those communal structures & resources in which those agreed upon rights are exercised, maintained, & protected.
A healthy, constructive society values its communal nature.
I've always disliked the use of inalienable rights or 'God-given rights' even 'natural rights' because the rights we have are only the rights that are by law AND by agreement of others at any given time which why rights often get ignored and violated particularly for those with less power.
This is your reminder that it's been ten months since the assassination of Melissa Hortman, her husband and her dog, and there hasn't been even a hint of justice for her family, friends or colleagues.
These protesters stood up for what's right. They knew they would likely be arrested, be targeted for violence, lose medical benefits for their injuries, or never have their medical claims approved. They did it anyway. We all have our powers. We can all use our powers.
