MOSAIC WITH A LION ATTACKING A BULL, C. 20 BCE (?). VATICAN MUSEUMS

This beautiful little emblema was found in Hadrian's Villa in 1779, but the VM catalogue dates it to the early reign of Augustus, well before the existence of the Villa. This is not necessarily a mistake: emblemata were valuable artworks and could be collected. If this is early Augustan, it was almost certainly a Greek import, as Roman mosaicists were not yet capable of such refined work. We see here a desert landscape with rocky outcrops at left and centre. A few shrubs provide a bit of greenery. The space is divided horizontally by a river, on the far side of which a bull looks at the main action, safe from attack. At centre foreground, a lion has pounced on another bull, which is looking across at the bull on the other side. The lion is sinking its teeth into the bull's left haunch. The bull is staggering, its front legs folding. It's a goner. This is a lesson about the savagery of nature.

Finished three of the four little #mosaic trays yesterday.

I think I may be addicted to the grouting part.

I now want to put broken glass and ceramic pieces on every wall of the house, just so I can make a gigantic mess with #grout.

One must have #goals eh?

Wishing you a great Monday, friends. 💙

The image shows a square object with a complex geometric pattern, placed on a wooden surface. The object has a white border that is slightly raised from the surface. The main pattern is made of tiles of different colours and shapes, arranged symmetrically. In the centre, there is an eight-pointed black star with an intricate design. Surrounding this central star, elongated diamond-shaped yellow tiles alternate with turquoise-blue square tiles. These tiles are arranged in concentric layers, creating a mosaic effect. In the corners of the main square object, there are small black and yellow tiles that appear to protrude from the white border.

Now printed with the right colours, the assembly is still a little tight... but I'm satisfied.. and ready to try a larger version...

Yep definitely obsessed. #mosaic

The grouting is my favorite part. It's so squishy!

This is a "glitter grout" so I'm curious to see how this looks once it's dried completely.

I may need a studio of some sort - my artwork is drying on shelves, cabinets, the floors.

It's taking over the house.

Remember the #mosaic thing that I've suddenly become obsessed with?

I'm working on my version of it today.

First impressions: Don't make your first mosaic project on a curved surface like this half vase.

(You'll end up with glue in your hair somehow.)

Horizontal is easier, I'm thinking.

A courtyard with a Roman house on the island of Kos. There was a remarkable amount of architecture there to enjoy.

In the foreground is a well preserved mosaic depicting big cats hunting prey. Behind it to the right are the remains of an ornamental pond, we see the walls around it all with doors and windows opening on to it.

GEOMETRIC MOSAIC PAVEMENT, C. 30 BCE. HOUSE OF LIVIA

While there is much to suggest that the domus said to be of Augustus was never the house of Augustus, this coeval domus contains lead pipes stamped with the name of IVLIA AVGVSTA, Livia's name after the death of her husband, when Augustus posthumously adopted her into the Julian house and gave her the use of his title. It was already semi-subterranean at the time, as we can tell from the downward ramp in the entrance hall. The mosaics here are quite simple but elegant, in black and white, this one, between the atrium and the tablinum, a framed rectangle based on hexagons and triangles. Livia raised her great-grandson Caligula in this house, though they didn't seem at all fond of each other. I imagine him in his little boots walking across this mosaic.
