This monochrome image shows a small rocky island at the edge of Horseshoe Falls, surrounded below by the roiling waters of the Niagara River and above by the brink of the mist-filled falls themselves. Further on, beyond the curve of the falls more of the ice-choked Niagara River can be seen, as well as the wooded shore of the far bank. The island is bare rock on the left, and is covered by an ice-encased tangle of branches and vegetation on the right. Gulls nest on the rocky end of the island, and circle around it in the air.

A courtyard with a Roman house on the island of Kos. There was a remarkable amount of architecture there to enjoy. In the foreground is a well preserved mosaic depicting big cats hunting prey. Behind it to the right are the remains of an ornamental pond, we see the walls around it all with doors and windows opening on to it.

A scramble round the rocks while on holiday in Fuerteventura brought me to this location where I could have rocks in the foreground that curve around and run up the right side of the frame with the beach carrying on from them. The sea is swirling up to the rocks, with the waves stilled a little by lengthening the exposure time. Above the sky holds the promise of another lovely day and just a hint of colour that comes with sunrise.

We see a wave pattern on a pebble beach, flattened with a long exposure as it snakes away from me. Beyond it on the left side are cliffs tumbling down to the shore and above a sky with light cloud could by the sun creeping up but still below the horizon.

Looking across Robin Hood’s Bay at low tide just after sunset. There is a tidal pool in the foreground with a few rocks reflecting the sky, which is a pale blue with a scattering of darker blue clouds and a tiny amount of colour left from sunset. Coming in from the left on the top third is the shoreline on which we see the costal cottages of the bay, the cliffs reach on beyond these to just past the centre of the image

We are looking down the Stilluptal Valley in the Zillertal Alps. There is a triangle of sky in the top centre with mountains either side. These come down until they meet with the valley bottom in which there is a stream. The stream flows in on the bottom left corner and curves up and round until it disappears between the mountains. All is verdant and green other than either side of the stream which is rocky.

A landscape oriented image of a bleak winter day in the Peak District. It’s snowing heavily but I was having to use a fast shutter speed as the wind was buffeting both me and my tripod so you can’t see the falling flakes. In the foreground to the right are some large granite rocks that are not snow laden so they stand out. Beyond them the snow covered mound of Higger Tor looms, beyond that we see nothing as the snow and mist has reduced visibility to a matter of metres.

A landscape oriented image taken on Whitby beach in late evening. In the lower two thirds is the beach, mainly sand but scattered with rocks in a sort of lazy S shape, the retreating sea has remained pooled around these rocks and reflects the sky. A portrait oriented image taken in the early blue hour in the Lake District National Park. The lake fills the bottom two thirds with two rocks sitting central and reflecting in the water on the first. Across the top third sits a small island emerging out of the mist. Behind this we see the mountains, but only vaguely owing to the mist. The sky above is just becoming visible. The mist give the scene an ethereal feel.

A landscape oriented image taken in an area known as Froggatt Edge. In these parts we tend to call cliffs edges, I’m not entirely sure why perhaps someone can enlighten me ☺️ We don’t see the edge in the image as I am standing a little way back from it. What we do see in the foreground are some large gritstone formations. Everywhere is covered with a good dusting of snow and the little strip of sky we can see at the top of the image is full of it, indeed it did begin to snow again soon after I took this photograph. Old stems of bracken from the summer gone by can be seen poking out of the snow adding a little touch of orange to the otherwise monochromatic appearance of the image.

A landscape panorama, only two stitches, of the shoreline in Fuerteventura. The rock formations on this beach were really interesting, scraggy mounds and smooth dips, curving round the sea for 500 metres or more. The bay they were in was a lovely horseshoe shape, I made the pano to include a fair bit of this. Beyond the rocks the waves are rushing in to the beach. Right in the distance are a few kite surfers, there were lots of them all around the island, we loved watching them doing their aerial acrobatics.

A landscape oriented infrared image. We’re stood on a cliff quite high up but not at the front of it, in fact we have rocks going up and away from us to the left and then sweeping down and away to the right, with jagged tops. In the middle dip we see through to the beach in the distance, the cliffs are various shades of black and grey, the beach and distant cliffs are a lighter shades of grey. The top third is a cloud filled sky, a mix of Cumulus and Cirrus (I think 🤔). What would be blue sky behind them is black because of the infrared. We also see the curve of the sea as it meets the shore. Infrared works well with this stark volcanic coast on Fuerteventura.

A portrait oriented image of the blue hour at a local landmark known as Curbar Edge. Taken lowdown close to the ground the bottom of the frame is filled with heather, being the blue hour the light is low so although it has some colour it’s not popping. What does stand out are the large rocks/boulders above it, which run up both sides of the image to the top third. They are stacked one on top of each other, have interesting shapes and are patterned with lichens. Looking between them we see distant trees resplendent in autumn colours. Beyond these are hills and above these on the top third is the early morning sky full of clouds in various shades of blue.

A landscape oriented image on a rocky foreshore in Fuerteventura a short while after sunrise. The rocky foreshore enters the image towards the bottom left curving around and climbing into the scene until midway up it reaches a small sandy beach that the low tide has exposed. Beyond the beach the rock continues climbing up into a low cliff. Foamy waves are hitting the beach and forming white horses further out. Along the top third the horizon holds on to the yellow of dawn above are a few clouds and the Mediterranean blue sky.

A landscape oriented image of a beach at sunset. We’re on a Greek island, Lefkada, just after the sun has dropped from the sky. The black, volcanic, sand goes diagonally from above centre on the left to the bottom right corner. In the bottom right is a low rock, the gentle waves are just hitting it. In the low light it was a fairly long exposure so the sea appears milky and calm. To be fair it was quite calm. The top third is filled with sky that glows orange and red along the horizon. Also on the horizon, over on the left are a line of three small rock islands. The balance out the single rock on the foreshore.

A portrait oriented image taken on the beach at St Bees in Cumbria. The beach, at low tide fills the bottom two thirds, with a shallow pool filling the frame across the bottom tapering as you go into the picture until it peters out about a third up. At its end is a sits a round rock. Beyond this rock the sea is lapping up onto the beach. The beach itself is sandy and the retreating tide has left beautiful ripples behind it. The top third is the early morning sky, light blue with a few dark clouds and the orange/yellow glow of the rising sun, which is reflected on the open sea.
