Photo: Apartment buildings of the city's contemporary downtown surround the stage of the Teatro Romano de Cartagena, constructed 5-1 BCE. Ancient columns rise from the stage of the theater into the skyline. Laundry of the city's residents dries on a clothesline in the lower quadrant of the photo and from a couple of balconies in the upper right quadrant. A billboard peaks out on either side of the centermost column with text that reads, in part, "Barrio Del Foro Romano."
The columns, according to the site's museum, are what they call a composite type (with Ionic and Corinthian elements) and are carved from pink travertine
As to colors, the columns match their bases in color and most of the apartment buildings are a slightly lighter, less pink, khaki. The sky is a brilliant "Mediterranean" blue with wispy white clouds.
