A dramatic nighttime photograph of the ancient Roman Forum in Rome, Italy. In the foreground, the towering stone columns of the Temple of Saturn on the right and the Temple of Vespasian and Titus on the left are brilliantly illuminated by bright white uplighting. The ruins glow against a dark, moody, and overcast evening sky. In the center background, the ornate dome of the Church of Santi Luca e Martina rises above the shadows, while the Arch of Septimius Severus is partially visible in the mid-ground. The scene captures the contrast between the glowing ancient architecture and the deep shadows of the Roman night

Per text on a placard at the Ram Forum
Ruins: "Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC in the Curia of Pompey in the Campus Martius and was cremated in the Forum, in front of the Regia. On this spot Augustus raised a temple, dedicated in 29 BC. Set on a high podium with six columns at the front, it was decorated with the rostra taken from the ships of Anthony and Cleopatra captured by Augustus, two years earlier, at the Battle of Actium. The altar, in the hemi-cycle of the podium, replaced the commemorative column. Staircases at the sides led to the interior of the building, of which only the cement core survives today."

Translation of Latin text on the stone placard or memorial at Caesar's tomb:

"ALTAR OF CAESAR
... THEY PLACED (CAESAR'S BODY) IN THE FORUM, WHERE IS THE ANCIENT ROYAL SEAT OF THE ROMANS, AND THEY ACCUMULATED ON TOP TABLES, SEATS AND WHATEVER OTHER WOOD WAS THERE... THEY LIT THE FIRE AND ALL THE PEOPLE STOOD BY THE PYRE DURING THE NIGHT. IN THAT PLACE AN ALTAR WAS FIRST ERECTED, NOW THERE IS THE TEMPLE OF THE SAME CAESAR, IN WHICH HE IS HONORED AS A GOD."

Was Caesar really a wannabe dictator, or did Cicero et al., have a biased agenda for their shrill objections?

Either way, Caesar's downfall ended ignominiously in the ruins of this now-dilapidated hovel that twerpy, sneaky Octavian/Augustus built as his tomb & altar in the #RomanForum. #IdesOfMarch

These divots on the steps of the #RomanForum were used to play an ancient game similar to mancala. My professor placed the stones as an example of how it would have been played.

We paid a bit extra for a personal tour of the Roman Forum with this hooded crow, who really knew his history. He's seen a thing or two.

Esiste a Roma un luogo in cui tre epoche si fondono e in cui fare un vero e proprio “viaggio nel tempo” ⏳.

Inside the ruins of an ancient Roman Forum at night. There are partial pillars, as well one tall one to the right, many steps, broken and ancient walls with uniform square holes and there are lights illuminating the scene, casting many shadows, and the sky appears indigo.

The Roman Forum developed over hundreds of years in a disorganized manner. Also, Tiber flooding and erosion from the surrounding ridges continuously raised the floor of the Forum. New buildings stood atop buried ones. Like a deep-dish lasagna ! #photography #travel #tourism #rome #romanforum #italy
