Israel’s renewed war on Lebanon is about more than just Hezbollah
After violating the ‘ceasefire’ 10,000 times, Israel is once again pounding Lebanon as its enduring thirst for war drives ever expanding ambitions.

Israel fires white phosphorus in southern Lebanon, illegal under international law
İran: ABD-İsrail saldırılarında 206 öğrenci ve öğretmen hayatını kaybetti gazeteoksijen.com/dunya/iran-a...
🔴 The death toll from Israeli attacks across Lebanon has risen sharply in the past week:
– March 9 (Monday): The toll reached 486.
– March 8 (Sunday): The ministry reported 394 deaths, including 83 children and 42 women.
– March 7 (Saturday): Casualties stood at 294 deaths and 1,023 injuries…
Four Palestinians were killed in two separate villages in the occupied West Bank this weekend, as Israeli settlers continue to ramp up their attacks amid the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.

One has hard time not to think that the Middle Eastern lifes (obviously not all but those not white/Western enough) do not count for the community in large.
It is not uncommon to see that the same community raises its voice against Trump in other occasions or against the October 7 attack (which was rightly so) or on Greenland.
These two countries completely obliterated the international law with the complicity of other powerful Western countries in the recent years. Take, for example, the genocide in Gaza or the kidnapping of Maduro and his wife. Silence in the community. Chilling.
It is deeply disturbing to see that the evolutionary biology community that I follow doesn't raise its voice against the atrocious crimes that the US and Israel have been committing. This is especially true for those in the US but in the West in general. +++
*Israeli
They killed more than 80 school children in Iran today in order to 'liberate Iranian people' (www.theguardian.com/world/2026/f...). Down with American and Israili imperialism!
New work from the lab: Miles @milesroberts.bsky.social tried out machine learning to estimate sweep times to fixation and (spoilers) it didn't really help www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... As always, we'd appreciate any feedback!

Interested in using aDNA time-series datasets to estimate selection?
Our study "Assessing Ancient DNA Sampling Strategies for Natural Selection Inference in Humans Using Allele Frequency Time Series Data" is now out in GBE! doi.org/10.1093/gbe/... @genomebiolevol.bsky.social @cegamorim.bsky.social
The United Nations says Israel displaced a record number of Palestinians in the West Bank last year.
The United Nations reports Israel displaced over 37,000 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank in 2025, a new record.
The main driver was Israel's military operations in refugee camps across the northern West Bank, but thousands were also displaced due to home demolitions and settler violence.
Balancing selection alert!! 🧬🧪
New preprint where we try to quantify how likely (or rather, unlikely) it is for balancing selection to maintain stable polymorphism, and how easy (or rather, challenging) it is to identify its signatures in genomes.

In a new GBE Review, @david-peede.bsky.social et al. overview the SMC model and extensions, discuss examples of discoveries made with the help of SMC-based inference, and comment on the assumptions, benefits, and drawbacks of various methods.

However, the rest (your conlusion) seems a bit too loose a standart to me. I think burden of proof should be on the side making such affirmative claims (that, this sample belongs to this species etc.).
I generally agree, especially with the part that 'species names and definitions should ideally correspond to the ancestral demographic structure of the organisms involved'. In fact, we started to learn a good deal about such processes thanks to recent genetic studies (thanks to yours as well) ...
isn't it part of a general problem though? doesn't this study (www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...), for example, call into question ubiquitous species-naming in hominin taxonomy? also, doesn't it have any reflections in adaptive story telling?
I finished my first ever class where I was the main instructure today. It was an evolution class, such a joy!
Excited about our new preprint showing bidirectional adaptive introgression between invasive and native crop pests over ecological timescales www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Ötzi and a 45,000-year-old Siberian were both infected with a cancer-causing strain of HPV.
This is fascinating, and a reminder that we have a vaccine that *prevents cancer* and everyone eligible should get it.
Cave opening in a rocky slope
The Yarımburgaz cave complex is around 22 km west of Istanbul, in the Thracian part of Turkey. An upper cave is the location of a Byzantine church, while a lower chamber has much older Middle Pleistocene record of choppers, modified flake tools, and remains of cave bears.
