Catching my eye in Gloucestershire’s Lower Woods last week, too.

Interesting. I haven’t heard that name before.

Profusion of blackthorn flowers filling the frame, with some close up in the foreground.
Beautiful blackthorn all over Gloucestershire this week. #treeflowers #wildflowerhour
A patch of low-growing wildflowers in a grassy field: four dandelions, red dead-nettle, speedwell, shepherd’s purse, common chickweed and hairy bittercress.
A whole frame full of wildflowers for #wildflowerhour: dandelions, red dead-nettle, speedwell, shepherd’s purse, common chickweed and hairy bittercress. Yesterday in a Gloucestershire field.
Wow, I’ve only ever seen one slow worm at a time.
I discovered some great wood ants’ nests in the New Forest this morning, and have the bites to prove it! I wonder how the ants react to so many slow worms on their patch?
Close up of blue speedwell flower growing low in a field, showing dark striations on petals and two stamens with black anthers and white filaments.
Speedwell in a Gloucestershire field this week. #signsofspring #wildflowerhour
Low angle close up of a bright yellow dandelion against blue sky, on the grassy margin of a field, looking as large as the distant tree beyond it.

This week in Gloucestershire: the snowdrops are fading, but the celandines steal the show. #wildflowerhour

Rain, rain, rain, winter aconites, rain, rain. Gloucestershire this week. #wildflowerhour
Wow! Ours (Gloucestershire) are not quite there yet - just a few very bedraggled ones.
Beautiful Green Hellebore, Helleborus viridis, in woodland on the edge of Croydon. 💚 It is a member of the Ranunculaceae, the Buttercup family. What look like green petals are in fact sepals, and the petals themselves are reduced to small tubular nectaries (visible in third photo). #WildflowerHour
Close up of yellow hazel catkins, with lots of out of focus catkins in the background, and a tiny, red female flower on the supporting twig.
Hazel catkins and one tiny, red female flower, in a rare moment earlier this week when it wasn’t raining and the air was still. #Gloucestershire #wildflowerhour
Very much enjoyed this exhibition this morning.
Close up of a clump of snowdrops, flowers fully open.
Snowdrops in Gloucestershire – this week, fully open. #wildflowerhour
Black-and-white image showing silhouette of an old oak tree in winter, beside a country lane, against overcast sky.
Tree of the week: an old oak on a Gloucestershire lane.
Endless rain and grey skies, not much wildlife about, but possibly the best time of year to admire old trees in the landscape?
Close up of a clump of snowdrops covered with water droplets from recent rain.
Snowdrops and raindrops. Plenty of both in Gloucestershire this week. #wildflowerhour
A clump of snowdrops on a bank strewn with fallen leaves.
Lots of snowdrops on the banks in Gloucestershire this week #wildflowerhour
Impressed with your pristine celandine. I’ve spotted a few in Gloucestershire this week, but all very battered!

The seals and seabirds are wonderful, but this week I’ve written about some of the less conspicuous nature I encountered in these magical isles. stillinthewild.substack.com/p/the-unexpe...
Does the new-term feeling of September ever wane? Not for me, it seems.

Some in the Isles of Scilly last week, too :) but so windy that photos unshareable!
A first for me: rock sea-spurrey. Small flowers, about a centimetre across. Decorating a slipway on Tresco, Isles of Scilly. #wildflowerhour #scilly
